Back up camera

Anyone added a factory one to a truck that didn't come with one? About the only feature I didn't get that I wanted.

Was looking today and noticed the mirror has wires running to it so I might just need the handle/ camera for the tailgate... Any thoughts ?

no nav right? because if you have nav, if im not mistaken the image comes up there. I know wires will be going to the mirror for the auto dimming feature. i guess it would all depend on what wires were going to the mirror, if the mirror actually had the screen in it.

also, if you open the tailgate, is there any wires running up through the bottom? i dont have a picture but in my truck there are wires that run from the truck to a connector thats at the bottom of the tailgate, then theres wires in the gate plus the handle and the camera. So i think i would crawl under or take the tailgate off first and see if there are any connectors without a connection, if that makes sense, that reach the tailgate.

I would assume everything like that is prewired as to not have to many wiring harnesses in the production process, because i know the dash harness in my truck has all the plugs for accessories i dont have, (auto 4x4, parking sensors etc).

if you have nav the camera image will show up there

if you dont have nav it will show up in the corner of the rear view mirror, so youll need to verify that all ford mirrors have that capability. other wise you might need the mirror too

I'll look at lunch for the harness to the tailgate as well as how many wires are in the.mirror... Didn't realize it auto dims as the mirror looks plain Jane, my widest car has a button to turn off the auto dim feature

I don't see a sensor in the mirror for auto dim.

The rear doesn't have a harness for the camera but IM sure it could be added. I'll probably end up going with an aftermarket unit

FWIW, my camera in my 08 is in the mirror, my dad's 11 has it in the Nav........I prefer the Nav view, it's much easier to see when backing up to trailers etc.

huh weird, i figured since there were wires going to it, it would be auto dimming. its possible that it would have the camera in it, then again, wouldnt one think that it would have auto dimming as well? i might have to run outside to look at mine. want me to grab a picture of the wires and such while im out there?

Yes please mine has a rather big connector but only three wires. Does the auto dim have anything on the mirror that let's you know it's auto.dim?

Maybe mine just has a dummy plug basically in the mirror

I think Ive got a mirror that went dead from my 08 here that I could send you if you want to take it apart and do the tinkering you do.
It had the image in it when it was working. Stopped for unknown reasons and I just replaced it. Send me a text if you want it

I'm assuming your mirror has the same connector. but i have three wires. you can also see in the first two pics there is the sensor at the bottom for the auto dimming. i also threw in a pic of the tailgate harness for good measure.

Yours has 2 more wires going into the mirror than mine does, and the mirror is different for the auto dim... wonder WTF mine is wired for? I might see if i can locate a schematic and find out

no idea man, thats kinda weird. sorry i couldn't be anymore help. i wonder what your mirror is wired for. unless its wired for a camera and not auto dim? that'd be kinda weird though.

dustin there is a guy on the .org that does these all the time. talked to him today about mine.

he sells the complete kits, mirror harness, camera. nav unit etc.

just to give you an idea i think it was around 600 to add a camera, that included the camera, harness, handle, new mirror, etc. as well as instructions for all install.
