Mine is reading at like 2000 degrees when starting the truck and then backs down sometimes to 1800 or so. What would make it do this it just started out of the blue.

What brand and model gauge?

Check your ground connections and as well the power connections. Also check to insure the probe is not loose in the mainfold.

if it reads max'd at start up, and then drops when idleing, i would say that he has the two wires backwards off the probe, if possible with his guage.

when i hooked up my water, i had them backwards, and it did just what his is doin. read high, then fell as it heated up.
