When is the most accurate time to check coolant levels running and right after, or when it is cold?

Alright its a little low when cold, is it alright to add a little distilled water to it to top it off, or should I wait to get it changed...and can you add any coolant or is it a special type that you need to add?
depends on what coolant is in it now, it's probably the Ford Gold stuff.
I always keep a little mixed 50/50 to top off
if you put the wrong stuff in you might be in for a heluva mess so make sure what's in there before you go adding
