Is there a difference between the gasser 6r140 and diesel one? I know the stall speed in the converter will be different but what about the rest?

yes there is. Cannot use a gas one in a diesel application. Clutch counts etc are different.

I remember see it when my friend and I were discussing if he should buy a F250 or F350 to snow plow. I read that the F350 had different internals to handle the extra weight rating.

I'll look for it. But I think I read it in a Ford brochure.

That would be 2017+ F-250 6.2 now gets “6R100”, F-350 6.2 gets the gasser 6R140.

The cases are completely different to bolt to the gas engines. The clutch counts are lower in a gas. Gas fwd 3 diesel 5, direct g 4 d 5, intermediate l/r and o/d are the same at 5, 5, and 7. Don't know if the drums have snap ring grooves in the drums are cut at different heights or the reaction plates are thicker. Probably not many hard parts are common. Bottom line not interchangeable fwiw.

The podcast in the thread about Morgan explains a lot about the different 6R140’s. The guy leaves a long legacy, we should use it.

It would be asinine if they went to the trouble to change the transmissions between a gas 250-350. But they were stupid enough to go back to where not all the transmissions can be converted to 4x4 without changing the main shaft.


They have to loose MILLIONS changing this dumb**** for no good reason.

If I remember correctly, ford said the 6R100 is optimized for the “light duty” 6.2.

Easier start offs and different gear ratios.

Which doesn’t make no sense, Ford makes 4 different transmissions now.

6R100 for F-250 6.2, 6R140 Gas for F-350 6.2, 6R140 for 6.7 F-250-F-550 and 6R140 HD for F-650-F-750.

Wasted money for a base trans that could be adapted to all applications.

I’m pretty sure of ford could save money, they would.. I’m sure there’s a reason they do this. Just for us, it doesn’t make sense.

The 5r110w is the later 08+ version of the 5r. External filter = 5r110 internal filter = 5r110w

I don't believe that's correct. Ford Changed their naming nomenclature many years ago. It happened during the AODE to 4R70W time frames (I think early '90s).

Ford now labels all their transmission in this fashion:

5 = 5 speeds
R = rear wheel drive (front wheel drive trans has an F here)
110 = torque capacity x 10
W = wide ratio gearset


Therefore, the "w" stands for wide ratio. From my understanding, the 5R110w has always been a wide ratio gear set.
