I think I found it, shaping the water pump spacer to be very close to the impeller for
better efficiency.

Yes, exactly. The water pump impeller is not shaped correctly. Its too far away from the housing too move any water. My dad just bent the impeller fins to be closer to the housing and wahlah it moves water. I can get more details from my dad if you need me to. No aftermarket water pump corrects this issue that we have found.

My buddy had a 66 tempest ( poor man's gto) in school and man I loved that car. Speedo would stop at 115 up hill or down so who knows what it would actually do but we thought it was a rocket. I'm a Ford guy but those are some sharp cars.
