97 OBS 7.3 power stroke 251k miles

Engine had an uneven crank and low compression on cylinder 8. Popping through intake. Verified that it was the intake valve by pressurizing that cylinder with both valves closed. Pulled the head to find the face of all of the intake valves extremely worn down, almost to a razors edge. Cylinder 8 was worn all the way down to where it would go up into the bore of the head. We did a valve job and put it back together. Runs like a top.

Not on as many valves as that but I tore 1 down years ago that was exactly like that. Sharpened to a razors edge.

Seems like I put a head on that side at the time. Iirc, that engine came back with problems not extremely long after.

Poorly filtered air mixed with crankcase vapors makes a great lapping compound.

I I have lots of intake valves floating around here that look like that.

That was my best guess as well. Still has factory air box though. Probably ran many miles with bad filter or open intake.

^^^ + 1

That looks like the handy work of oiled gauze to me. There good for the track, but don't filter well enough for anything else. I speak from experience.
