My thought is that the owner thought it was a cracked head and took it to the mechanic with the symptoms and the mechanic checked the symptoms and agreed. If the owner took it in and just said to replace the heads then that is a different story. I guess clarification is really needed.
Wonder if they checked the heads as too if they really were cracked.

Mechanic ran the engine, ran diagnostic tests, etc .... and diagnosed it himself after I described what was going on. He sent me an estimate only after he confirmed what he thought was the problem and what repair needed to be done.

I’d like to see what the exact code was and the cracked head. Never heard of a 6.7 with cracked head causing coolant out exhaust.
But if this were in our shop and the rod failure was unrelated to original repair then you’d be paying the bill. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Sounds like it did in fact get coolant in the cylinder at some point. Could be a crack, head gasket or sucked in from someplace else. It probably tried to hydro lock or did at some point and bent the rod. Hence the balance code, likely due to low compression in the hole. You need to sit down with your mechanic and work out an arrangement that suits you both. Its not entirely your fault and it is not entirely his, one thing to remember, anytime coolant or any liquid gets into the combustion chamber and the engine is ran or attempted to be ran, the possibility of hydro lock exists. Hydro lock equals a bent or broken rod.
