I bought my 95 brand new and never used the block heater thus far

But since it’s 0° today

It’s got me thinking

What’s the procedure for these things?

I always assumed you would plug the block heater in after the engine was up to running temperature

Such as when you park the truck for the end of the day.... so it keeps the coolant at a semi-warm temperature.

Otherwise you are just trying to heat very very very cold coolant.

Am I thinking right here?

Just thinking out loud.

Thanks

the procedure is you plug it in and let it warm up the coolant. Some people leave them plugged in overnight. Others use a timer and set it to come on 45 mins prior to when you want to start the truck. No benefit to doing as you described.

Ah
Ok sootie
Thanks.

I haven’t started the truck in about a week

And it’s been about 0°

I know the batteries are strong and the glow plug system

I think I will plug it in tonight and see if there’s any difference to starting in the morning

Funny

Because of the cold weather this week

Some younger drivers were complaining

And I was telling them about years ago when we ran all R model Macks

Pretty much every driver was responsible for starting their own truck in the morning.

I always had a can of either

I would also sometimes throw a toilet paper roll inside a coffee can with some diesel fuel
And let it slowly burn just underneath the oil pan.

It would last for about 8 to 10 hours

I tell that story today to the the new guys
And they look at me like I have two heads

LoL

The world is changing I tell you...

I think mine is weak.
I have it set to come on 3 hours before I leave. Still don't get heat til I'm halfway there. Lol
It read 13.6 ohms though.

I was under the impression that it took 4 hours for it to get fully up to temp. Don’t really pay any attention because I plug mine in when I get home anyway because I don’t leave at a set time every day.

Maybe yall should pull the elements out of the oil filter housings, and wire brush em up. They're like whats in a water heater, they get quite the buildup of crap on them.

Good point. But I think if I pull it, I would just go ahead and replace it. Since gotta drain the coolant anyways. Or do the vacuum trick. Lol

Lets up the ante....

Is it OK for me to run home heating oil in my powerstroke?

kinda serious...
I run it in my brand new Kubota tractor and have no issues at all....
matter o fact, it came from the dealer with red fuel in it....

but i've always heard the warnings of clogged injectors.... blah, blah...

I recently went to E-fuel and external filters....

been mulling it over....

color of fuel has nothing to do with fuel refinement or quality.

Umm. Red fuel in your tractor is off-road fuel. Meaning untaxed. Which you can run as long as you don’t have it registered for street use.

Not exactly. But almost.

If a cop tests your fuel and you got red diesel, expect a hefty fine.

a cop will never do that for a passenger vehicle.

Hell,
I've been driving tractor trailers for 30 years + and have only been tested ONCE.

they drop a long clear straw down the tank ... put their thumb on the end and take a look.

I'm not worried about legal aspects.... just how the truck will run..

They do down south where I’m at. They pulled my buddy over and dipped his tank.
