Manual transmission swap

I can get my hands on a 5S-42 trans and all parts needed for the swap with the exception of drive shafts for $1000. I want to do a swap because I will be making more power soon, I doubt my e4od has much life left at 60000 miles since the last rebuild and I love shifting. My truck has 4.10 gears and is on 35s, how is the 5S-42 for my setup(looking for first hand knowledge)? Also will I have problems when it comes to figuring out what clutch to use since the part numbers are different for a 5S-42 and a 5S-47?

My neighbor has stg2 injectors and sbc single clutch with barders diy 63mm 5 spd boy oh boy does that thing pull good..

I too am interested in a manual swap I have 4:10's also

I have 4.10's, and a 5 speed. Mods in my sig. I honestly don't like it. Can't wait to do an auto swap. 5 speeds are sloooowww.

Same here, it's god awful, and damn near red lined going 80 on the highway.

An automatic isn't going to help that much, you need to do a gear swap.

I'll run my truck at 80 all day long with no problems with the 5 speed and 4:10's

Shift faster... Lol my brothers dodge is fast.. Then again a nv5600 shifts smoother with shorter gears then a zf.

Yeah I would love to swap an auto into mine. The only reason to have a 5 speed is if you like shifting. Otherwise go built auto and do everything better.

My buddy did the auto to 5 speed swap. He loved stick cars. 1.5mpg better towing same small 5'ver over 400 mile route. Better downhill coasting control with stick. All wiring worked.

6 months later, he swapped the auto back in, constantly shifting a truck was not as much fun as shifting his 6-speed 392 475hp Challenger. Left leg/rt. arm got tired.:(

The problem with the S42 is the Horrific 1st and reverse gears. WAY to high if you actually USE the truck. The S47 has a much lower 1st and reverse. Perfect for maneuvering a trailer.

I dont drag race my truck, i use it as it was intended so the 5 speed is perfect for me. I can be 1000 miles away from home grossing out at 23k and have ZERO fear of my trans leaving me stranded

I have 4.10's with 35's and the 5 speed. Seems as if the motor's rpm's are too high at 80 mph. I've watched semi trucks pass me too often on the freeway

I too have a 95 7.3. Swapped in a ZF5s47 to replace the ZF5s42 because of age and syncros. It lags a little taking off in 2nd but once in 3rd she flys. It does rev high (2700 rpm @ 85mph) but it likes it there. The reverse sucks tho with a trailer. I leave the hubs unlocked and put it in 4low (ie 2low), and it's just about perfect. If semi trucks are lapping you, there is something wrong with your motor.

I have 410s but at 75 on the highway I run 2500 rpm. It sucks through fuel. Auto trans 4x4 155k never had trans work

Well I'm getting passed because I really can't get to 80 mph. RPM's are too high. 2700 to 2800. Not normal?
