I'm building a set of upipes using 304 stainless. What's your guys opinions on tig/mig. I can mig them myself but idk how they will hold up being stainless and using er70s6 wire.

I would tig them if I had a tig but I don't, I could find someone local but if mig will be fine I'd rather just mig them myself.

Mig will be just fine. Wont look as nice but will be plenty strong. Pickup a small roll of SS mig wire and use 100 argon if you CAN and you will be good to go.

Keep in mind I have welded plenty of SS pipe together with plan old shield mig wire with out any issues. Will rust over time but thats it.

That's all I wanted to hear!!! I will try to get some SS wire and argon before the weekend if I have time.
I've done stainless before with plain old mig but never on something that will see high temps.

Local welding shop recommended using 308 wire and 75/25. I thinkI'm gonna go that route and see how it works.

I always used a tri mix when welding stainless. 90% Helium - 7.5% Argon - 2.5% Co2.

Sounds good^ I'm thinking that .023 will be the wire size I should get. The upipes are 16 ga.

Well I got some 308 .030 wire and it does pretty well I would say. I'm just using 75/25 still. I tried to use some .023 that I had found in the barn but it just wouldn't feed right, probably need to buy a .023 liner instead of trying to use our .035 liner.
I think the pipes will hold up well and they shouldn't rust as fast with the stainless wire.

I have always used a tri mix for gas when welding SS with mig.

Trimix is what you want. The 75/25 has too much co2 and will introduce too much carbon to the weld bead causing it to rust over time which is further accelerated by the extreme heat. The trimix is expensive though.
