V10 mileage improvement recommendations

A guy can fantasize, can't he?:shrug: I told the wife to do her best to keep it under 2K rpm's. I don't know how far that'll get me with her lead foot, but I thought it would be worth a try.

Id say you can actually do it. My grandpa always told.me "boy, with enough perseverance a man could sleep with a snake." I routinely pull waaay above 15 in my 2k cc/sb with 6" and 37s. In fact I switched to 35s and 20s and cruising at 75 the cts was.showing.fuel.mileage to be at 17or a blip higher so right over 15 in real world numbers.

On a trip we see 14.5 to 15 MPG with our V10 Excursion.. other then that it is 8.5 tp 10.5 driveing 5 miles round trip to church...

That is with 4:10 Gearing..

Thats better than a 5.4 does with two less cylinders. Hell my 2wd rc/lb truck.with 3.73s got 14 but only weighed 5k lbs. Thats borderline unbelievable. Especially with 4.10 gears.

In fact if you drive 55 or less and just let it deside where to stay at on the hills you can get 16 to 17 MPG.. BUT you never get anyplace....


I have been told I drive like a OLD man... Maybe that helps???

I drive for.economy 90% of the time. I have had gassers and.diesels both. Ive had four superduties, two gas, two.diesel. The gassers get waaaaaay less mileage. I drive the same in both styles. If you can get that mileage, good on ya. Having experienced that very motor with even less.cylinders getting worse mileage, I just cant get with it.

Hell the op just said his mileage was under 10. Thats what Ive found. The 5.4 gets 11ish. The 460 they used to shove in these trucks was 8-10. The 5.4 got slightly better.

I think you missed the point... We get 8.5 to 10.5 doing short trips.. kind of like in town driving...

Tuner, intake, Y pipe, then they do quite a bit better power and economy. I had one that went from 6mpg towing to 8.5 towing the same load. It would get 14-15 highway with 35" MT's

Well, The wife likes to put $50 at a time in it for whatever reason, and not let it get too empty, but I finally convinced her to run it all the way down, then fill it. She accidentially put in 85 octane (minimum required is 87, especially for this elevation), and it turned out to be a hand calculated 10.87 filling it when the fuel light was on. That gives us a 1 mpg improvement from the previous 87 octane with all stock stuff. The cat is sitting in the corner of the garage, and mild SCT tunes are loaded. We'll see in a few weeks what the 87 will do, and report when that tank is empty. We're still at 3/4, so it will be a bit.

The biggest things you can ever do is taking off and accelerating as easily and slowly as possible. Plan all stops and slow downs. Remember using the brake is no different than hitting the go pedal. Next thing is fill your tires to the maximum rating. You want to be running on the least amount of tread when going straight and it also lowers friction.

Add a air dam to the front below the bumper will gain you 1 mpg maybe more. Something that goes as low as possible with just enough ground clearance you are not hitting it over speed bumps.

On things you add to the engine exhaust header tunes etc..I would try resetting the computer by pulling the battery cables and touching them together for a minute. On a number of vehicles the reset causes the computer to relearn and when you add or change devices or tunes apparently it makes a difference sooner. As far as I know its a gasser thing at least its not a 7.3 thing as far as I can tell. It may do nothing but it may help either way its harmless other than having to reset radio channels and code if you have one.


You could add a water meth injection kit and then it could still be used with the diesel to control EGTS and add a bit of mpg on the diesel once it goes it. Would help with the fact you are having to run higher octane fuel as well I would think. Unlike the diesel since there is no direct cylinder injection so the metering so mixing basically like the fuel. So you do not have the down side of meth like you do with diesel I would think. Anything that can be carried over to the diesel swap IMO is a good thing and should make it higher on the list of things to do

Well, I just got back from an 1100 mile round trip from home to salt lake, to southern Utah, and back so my family and I could spend Christmas with my side of the family. If I learned anything, it's keeping my top speed down, along with easy accelerating. For 99%+ of the trip we never got over 65 MPH, and we noticed a huge difference right away. First full tank averaged a hand calculated 14.4, and the second was 13.7, with a lot of city driving in the mix. I'm pretty sure my last tank is the best so far as I have 470 miles on it, and still about a needle width above 1/4 tank. If you can afford to not be in a hurry, that's the best difference I have seen yet.

Does Colorado have any laws about converting a gasser to diesel? Been thinking of picking up a ex gasser and throwing a cummins in it but wasn't sure.

I couldnt break 12 in our old v10 ex. We had it for about a year and traded it in on a expedition w/a 5.4. That was an 11mpg wonder. The gassers just arent mileage getters. My rclb 5.4 xl fx4 worktruck qould get 12mpg whether you beat it or drove like a grandpa. Believe this or not it pulled better than my 94 3/4 ton rclb with the 460 AND that had 4.10 r&p. Thats why its hard for me to believe people who say "oh my 460 pulls just as good as.a.stock 7.3" Ive had both so its even harder for me to believe. Sorry Wayne, im rambling about stuff that bears.no importance.

If its like ohio, then you can use any truck motor the same year as yours or newer.

I'm sure you can put in anything at least as new as the vehicle as long as all the emissions stuff works. I did it with my '84 bronco I put the '97 7.3 L in. This excursion will at one point be converted to '08 6.4 stuff when I get the funds too. I'm sure if you dropped an old 12v in the only people who would care are the emissions people if you have that where you live. Technically you have to re-apply for a title to change the fuel type, but generally no one at the DMV cares beyond that. They don't really check anything except that it is a diesel. It's not like the DMV people are engine specialists. The problems lie within the emissions stations if you don't have it compliant.

Fwiw, there was about 750# of people & cargo, with no trailer. I haven't pulled anything with the excursion except my truck with a rope when the trans broke, but I expect it would get about 5 mpg going 75 with that much weight if it could even go that fast. I'd rather use a tired stock obs 7.3 to tow with over that excursion as far as power is concerned.

Ha ha, that last sentence sums it up perfectly! And yes, 5mpg.is.doable in anything with the v10. Its disgusting how thirsty those can be.

I'm not really a gasser fan, I would rather have diesel, but diesels are way more expensive all the way around. I sold my diesel for top dollar and turned around and bought a good f250 v-10 for 5 grand. It's cheap all the way around and is way more fun to drive than a stock 7.3. It's a dollar or more cheaper per gallon too, so it comes out to be a wash when you compare fuel costs vs fuel economy. I honestly would rather have a tired old 7.3 as well, but I couldn't find one anywhere close to as nice as this v-10 for the money and operating costs.
