I have pulled my engine, by myself, no less than 4 or 5 times.
Never ever had the hood off, or lifted the cab, or anything else.
I just take my time. No issues at all really, and no "special" tools required.
Only real special tools were 3 foot long extensions for my 3/8" drive ratchet wrench...and that was to get at the torque converter bolts from the front of the engine.
I can usually have it out, and on a stand in about 2 hours working by myself.

I bought a snap-on 3/8 mid length socket for the torque converter nuts so you can take the inspection plug out on the bottom of rear cover so you can get right at them.Makes it way easier I also use a starter button to bump the motor over to get the torque converter nuts out.

Yeah that's would help for sure.
When I installed my transmission this summer, I just used a mirror to see the flexplate and holes in the torque converter, and went in the side inspection cover again...couldn't do it from the from, as the whole front end would of had to come off to see down the side of the block.
