Below is a test we ran on a D13 Volvo. The truck runs 24 hours a day. It has 2 drivers and never stops moving. They only changed the filter once (at 85,000 on the oil, 211,000 on the truck). When they changed the filter they put 2 quarts of Shell in it to top off what was in the filter, and it crapped out soon after (Base number fell out quick).
This isnt something that I would ever suggest, I would never add anything to our oil on extended drains, or change the filter that infrequently. But if anyone ever doubts how robust our oil is here is proof.
This is our 8530 (non synthetic with a HTHS number of 2.9....) 10w30. It also improved the MPG from 6 to 7.5. These guys now have over 1200 trucks running our oil most way past a million miles averaging over 80k mile PM's. We save them hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in lubricant purchases, labor, and downtime. We also cut their reactive maintenance from 45+% to less than 10%.
