Default T-stat on a idi

Can you just remove the t-stat on an IDI or does it cause the same coolant flow issue as on a DI?

Got a buddy that is fighting an overheating issue and stuck on the grapevine in Cali...

If you remove the t-stat on a 7.3 DI the coolant does not flow properly, similar to using the long stem stat.
