Will more than 10psi really kill my 7.3 IDI?

I hear this all over the place, that I'll wreck my engine if I go much past 10psi. I'd like to go 15 or even 20 psi. The DB2 should be good for 350hp give or take and I'd like to get close to that. I've got a Banks sidewinder. It rarely pegs the the boost anyway and EGT's have never been above 900 to my knowledge. Last time they got that high I was hauling heavy and the boost was pegged at 10.5.

I've been running a maxed out db2 for about 5 years and 15 psi of boost and it's been fine. The db2 won't give you that much fuel for 350hp though.

I dyno'd a few years ago before intercooler and pump timing and I put down 202rwhp and 430rwtq through a 5spd and 37" tires with 4:10 gears and a fan that was stuck on.

Maybe it's 320hp. I'm pretty sure I read that the DB2 is good for 40-45hp per cylinder. What's that 202rwhp work out to at the engine in a truck setup like that. I know for sports cars the rule is multiply by 1.15 to make up for driveline loss but there has to be much more loss through a 1 ton driveline and 37" tires.

It's safe to run 15 max psi on a stock engine, add head studs and you could go 20+ psi.

I have seen studded motors go at 17 pounds and stock bolts are good to around 12

@rsr911 If you show me a dyno sheet that says you are making 320 HP out of an IDI i will shake your hand and buy you a beer....

Clarification. I didn't say I was making 320 with and IDI. I read somewhere that that is the amount of fuel a DB2 pump can put out, enough for 40 or 45 per cylinder so 320-360hp.

DB2= Standadyne DB2 rotary injection pump.

That sounds better, the DB2 for sure can pump that amount of fuel out, the trick is getting it into the cylinder at the right time with enough air....... and of course keep the block together and the heads attached LOL

What's the issue with the wrist pins? I've read the wrist pins go bad. Who makes studs for a 7.3? I've only seen them for a 6.9.

ARP makes studs, you just have to call and ask........And you might get a good deal, from what I've heard they are in the process of making a 7.3 IDI head stud kit.

That's why the 93-94 turbo motors have bigger wrist pins, different valves, pistons, etc....

So without studs I'll likely pop the gaskets above 15 correct? But can run safe to 20 with studs? Seems like a fair trade. So how do I turn up the boost? Is the waste gate adjustable?

I'm pretty sure you can adjust it, but I don't know, I have a non waste gated.

The biggest way to make more boost is by turning up the fuel pump.

How hard is to stud the heads ????

Its not hard to do studs, and they will hold your motor together a little longer.

IMO though (being a former IDI owner/lover)... Just drive the thing. You can spend A LOT of money on an IDI and your net gain will never be that great. I loved my IDI, It was slow and smokey, but it was just as slow and got the same mileage whether it was empty or loaded down with the trailer and a backhoe. Mine was a 6.9 N/A with injectors, a tweaked pump, and a little bit of timing.

I've heard of guys getting 15-20 on old engines and lasting.

Also the db2 is capable of 40hp per line on the engine dyno, w/o parasitic drag. In the truck on the rwd you might hit 250... Maybe.
