I stole this when I was doing some research filters.

All CFM numbers were between 16" H2O and 20" H2O (from what I read, this is the optimal range to determine the most true CFM flow for the calculated 631 CFM flow for the 7.3 Powerstroke).

From the Donaldson Air Cleaner Selection Guide: To find the correct CFM of a filter in a more simplistic calculation, you use the following formula:

Airflow (CFM) = HP (SAE) x SA
Where HP is listed at maximum value and a certain RPM, on the stock 7.3 Powerstroke, this = 275 HP
SA = (Specific Airflow) per HP. There are different values for 4-stroke, 2-stroke, natural aspirated vs turbo, etc. For the 7.3 Powerstroke, this number is 2.3

So, CFM = 275 HP X 2.3 SA, CFM = 632.5

This is a CFM airflow rate at the maximum HP your truck outputs. Replace the HP # to find out what CFM filter you would need.

The AIS is rated at 650 CFM. So, 650 = xHP X 2.3. 650/2.3 = 282.6 According to the Donaldson filter guide's equation, the AIS is good up to 282.6 HP.

*I did find other reputable companies that had calculations and they all were consistent with one another.
wow, good info.. but how does it work when swamps has made over 800hp on one 6637 (only the donaldson version) with that calculation?

replaced the drag link and trac bar bj again. hopefully drilling and tapping those parts for grease zerks makes the difference. only had 25k miles on trac bar and it was dry. the drag link to pitman arm joint wasnt dry but it had side to side movement in less then 1500 miles.

I calibrated my EGT gauge; at 211 F (boiling @ 950' elevation), it was 9 F low. It's right with the world now. :)

The problem with that statistic is that no intake vacuum data was included.

For me, that speaks more to the ability of what ever manly/capable turbo was installed. It would be very interesting to see the hp numbers from an open intake and 2 filters.

In the real world, I had a lot of smoke (ZF5 and 3.55 gears) with one filter. Very little smoke with an open intake and "some" smoke ( I can see behind me) with two. I made the two 10.5" Donaldson filter option permanent.

For anyone who would like to "see" the difference? I installed a port in one filter (closed end) and ran a temporary hose into my cab and can see the numbers on my manometer. (dead simple to make)

The morale of the story: the easier you can make drawing air for a turbo, that will result in less smoke, more boost and faster spooling.

the moral has been around for a few years now.. lol.. i did the dual donaldsons a few years back and have threads on psa and the other place we dont mention anymore(psn) and found the exact same results. i may go back to the dual setup once i get a bigger set of injectors and a higher flowing drop in turbo in my dually.

Dropped it off at Truck Source Diesel for some tuning on the new injectors and a few other things.
