I'm going to be moving my modded 17° from my 96 over to my new truck sometime soon. When I installed the modded 17° in the 96 I used some black Permatex sealant that was supposed to be oil resistant, and I don't know if I just didn't use enough or if it was the wrong stuff but there was a small oil leak at the little plate you have to remove to remove the gear from the HPOP.
That tube of sealant is currently AWOL in the garage some place, but I do have some sealant I was using on a dirt bike engine. It's Threebond 1194, and it's supposed to be fuel and oil resistant as well. Can I use this to seal up that cover? Tech info on Threebond 1194

That link isn't working for me but if it's supposed to be fuel and oil resistant then go for it... I would go to Ford and buy the right stuff. It cost 21 bucks for 5 oz but that stuff is handy to have around

I've used a sealer that comes a can called Great Stuff or something like that and never had it leak. It can also be used to seal wet areas like diff covers etc and doesnt have any cure time.

I always use permatex ultra black and ultra copper sometimes. never had a problem with either. You could have beent the cover some when pulling it off the first time. The stuff you have now will probably work though.

That spot is a pain to get clean which I would about bet was the issue before. DP-Tuner and I think Strictly Diesel or perhaps Dieselsite sell a HPOP bolt cover that uses an O-ring there instead of silicone. The Ford or International Grey silicone is an excellent product even though it is pricey.

I think the problem last time was I wasn't generous enough with the sealant. I'll try the gray stuff I have (unless I find the ultra black somewhere) and see what happens.

this stuff RULES. http://permatex.carshopinc.com/product_info.php/products_id/42256/25224
we hung speakers on the shop walls, mounted a cb under the dash of the tandem, made valve cover gaskets, oil pan gasket. it just works.

the cb and speakers were to see of we could make it fail. :D

Yea, thats the stuff I mentioned earlier, just had the name wrong. Hard to find sometimes but I used to keep it in my Jeep for on the trails because you could make an instant gasket for anything without having to worry about cure time. I've done several diff covers with it when I needed to fill the diff and use the vehicle right away and a bunch of other things I cant remember right now.
