Actually, only the 3 and 4 valve motors have phasers. The 2 valves do not. If it has aluminum valve covers, it will have phasers, if they are plastic, no phasers.

I'd have to do a bit more research, but I didnt' think the older 5.4s had as much trouble with the cam phasers at the maybe 04-07ish ones. I do know they are famous for spitting the plugs out though.

The 4.6 2 valve started in 91, was most commonly gone by about 04 when the mustang switched to 3 valve. The 5.4 started around 96-98 and was a 2 valve until 04 or so, then the 3 valves came out. I think my years are right, at least pretty close...

The one you guys bought will be a 2 valve and should be pretty decent aside from chains, guides and tensioners depending on how well it was maintained.
