since the first time i took an obs turbo out i hated everything about it except the exhaust side flange

well ive been pondering this for a while and tonight i finally got around to trying it

behold a hybrid stock turbo

e99 intake housing and center section
obs exhaust housing and wheel

best of both worlds ... bolts to the uppipe collector and no removing the pedestal with the turbo

i know this isnt for everyone but i had the parts around the shop
so what does everyone think?

This is awesome buddy! Is everything going to function as it should, bearings and such with a different center section? So does this have to utilize a e99 pedestal as well?

Rebulid kits are pretty much the same obs thru 99.5

And yes it will bolt to e99 pedestal

After work im gonna make sure it will bolt back to the uppipe collector

From what I have been told while researching this, the center sections are all the same so there shouldn't be any issues. The only rub which won't matter to many is that the EBPV setups are different on the OBS and SD and I'm not sure you could connect the OBS EBPV to the SD pedestal. Any words on that Jim? Also curious, after taking the time to disassemble both turbos and swap parts around do you think it would be money/time ahead to just swap the complete E99 turbo assembly in and change the up pipe collector flange to the V-band SD setup?

Interested to hear how this goes tonight Jim, is there any difference in the width of the center sections? Like, is the intake tube going to have to reach an extra 1/2 inch or something from the beather piece?

Yea I considered that as well, but more in the context of if you could still delete it just fine not reattach it, but I see what your saying some people want it back on I guess.
In terms of time and money, if you have your turbo out to be freshened up anyways, the time difference would not be significant, and you would save it in future services with ease of removal. I like the bolt on collector, not a fan of the vband clamp, so if you have parts to swap it all over, I would be more inclined to make the hybrid and save the bolt on collector, if this all works out.

In this experiment I used a e99 van turbo. Exhaust wheels and housing a/r are the same as obs turbo this however is not true for the stock e99 turbo I beleive the exhaust wheel and a/r are diffrent than obs
The hybrid turbo pictured is actually using the e99 wheels. Only thing obs is the exhaust housing

The obs compressor housing and e99 housing are not the same as far as bolt pattern.. the obs will not bolt up to the e99 center section

Inorder to use a e99 turbo on an obs you would need a e99 van trubo. The outlet of a e99 van is the same as obs while other sd turbos are a diffrent size... finding this out is what started this entire process as I was going to put a e99 van turbo on my obs but then found out the wheels and a/r were the same

Jim what do you mean the outlet of the e99 Van is the same while other SD are different. Are the center sections between e99 van, and e99 SD the same? If so, then cant you just use the OBS exhaust wheel/shaft in the OBS exhaust housing, with an early99 SD center section/compressor housing, and a e99 pedastal.

Ahhh yes, 4 bolts vs. 5 right?

I know the L99 truck turbos are different but I would have sworn the E99 truck turbo has the same size compressor housing outlet as the OBS. The E99 truck turbo is basically an OBS turbo with a wastegated 0.84 A/R exhaust housing.

To clarify or try
E99 van turbo will bolt straight to the obs down pipe with stock e99 van turbo exhaust housing

As far as bolting the compressor housing to the center section the e99 and obs are both 4 bolt but the spacing is slightly off think 8x6.5 and 8x170mm lug patterns both 8 just diffrent spacing

What does the A/R stand for?

Not worried about compressor housing to center section, that would both be off a E99 SD turbo so they would mate just fine. But will a e99 SD center section bolt to an OBS Exhaust housing?

So obs exhaust housing and wheel, with e99 SD center section and compressor housing should work/be the same as what you've done with the exception that it's using the obs wheel as well as exhaust housing ...?
