Default Wheel/Tire Tech Thread

I noticed that there are a lot of threads started on the forum related to wheel size, tire size, and what will fit at certain ride heights without rubbing. I am starting this thread so everyone can post up good technical information about what has worked for them and what hasn't worked. Pictures of setups are definitely good. When you post up pics and your setup, be sure to include wheel specs, suspension specs, and tire specs. That way it can stay more technical and helpful rather than people just showing off their setup.

I'll start...

Factory 20x8 wheels, 295/60/20 Nitto Terra Grapplers, stock height F-250. The tires measure roughly 34" tall and 12" wide on these wheels. There is no rubbing anywhere with this setup.

20x9 BMF Novakane's, 0 offset, 305/55/20 Toyo Open Country AT's, 4400 lb 5.4L front springs and no rear block. The tires measured a little over 32" tall and little over 12" wide mounted on the wheels under the weight of the truck. There was no rubbing with this setup with the fender well liner zip tied back.

Same setup as above, but with 305/50/20 Toyo Proxes. No rubbing obviously. The tires measured about 31.5" mounted and under the weight of the truck.

20x9 BMF Novakane's, 0 offset, 325/60/20 Toyo Open Country AT's, 2.5" leveling kit and 3.25" rear blocks. The tires measured about 34.8" on the wheel and were almost 13" wide. There was no rubbing at all with the setup with the fender liner pulled back. I also had this same setup on my truck with a 4" lift....no problems there either obviously.

Factory 20x8 wheels, 325/60/20 Toyo Open Country AT's, 2.5" leveling kit and 3.25" rear blocks. The tires rubbed on the radius arms at full lock but did not rub the fender well liner. Once I put these tires on the 20x9 BMF's, no more rubbing on the radius arms. 325's seem to be a little too wide for factory wheel back spacing from my experience.

99 F250, 4x4, 100% Stock suspension, 20x10 wheels, -24 offset, 305/50/20 tires.

It is tight in the front but it does not rub. The closest I get to rubbing is about 1/4". The tires stick out about 2" and it will sling rocks and water down the side of your truck. I would like to try a deeper offset but my pockets aren't that deep and it may cause rubbing on the leafs, don't know for sure though. I tried to get some good angles.

No, negative offset forces the wheels/tires to stick out farther. Offset is measured from the centerline of the wheel to where the wheels mount to the hub. Negative offset will give you a bigger lip on the appearane side of the wheel, also causing them to stick out from the body line.

20x12 fuel throttles. 325/50/20 Mickey Thompson atz.

2000 f250 with 07 front end. Completely stock suspension.
Good bit of rubbing left front inner fender liner. Cut about 5-6 inches off to ensure no rubbing. Right fender liner almost never rubs except on uneven ground and at full lock.

I should add that the tires stick out 2-3 inches past the fenders.

I had 40x14.50R18's on my 04 8" lift they rubbed at full lock I hit a bump. Didn't rub the springs though if that's what your getting at.

Yeah, thanks man. Got any pics? I've been thinking 38x15.50x20 on 20x12 machined Fuel Throttles.

Only pic I have of it with the 40's probably don't really help much. I'd pot another set on if Johnny law wouldn't bust my balls on the lift laws. They put me 2.5" over height

what offset and backspace do I need to run a set of 16x10 with a 33-12.50 on a 99-04? Plan on doing a 4.5" icon hanger kit with 35s later down the road.

id say a -12 to -18 offset would give you a good stance..theyd stick out about 1 1/2-2" and still be able to clear 35s in the future without a problem

Awesome thread answered my questions about offsets.... Wanting to get a set of BMF SOTA or Novakanes for mine with just 2.5" block in the front. Possible stick with 325x65 it had now or go with 35x12.5 it had when I bought it. If I go to a 20" rim with same size I am running on a 18" will it rub or have any issues??

How would a -24 or -25 offset look with a 4.5" backspace?

305-50-20... IIRC that is what Mike D. was running with the same setup on a CC 4x4.

That's no joke... A friend I work with just damn near rolled his truck around a corner because his blocks came out. It was a nasty sight.

Off topic but did you ever race at the flashlight drags in Ebensburg? I ran a truck just like yours one time there and wondered if it was you...

2000 F250 2wd stock height, 20x10 wheels with 4.5" backspace (forgot the offset) and 305/55/20 tires. No rubbing with the 05 conversion after pulling back the inner fender liner a little with a zip tie. I did have to hit the front bottom corner of the 2000 bumper with a hammer a little bit.

Really!? I have been running these 2.5 billet blocks for years and never had an issue. They are bolted to the bottom of the spring cup. How would they come out??

Sorry if I'm derailing the thread.

So will a 325/65-18 fit on a stock 08 4x4 or should I go with the 295/65-18? This is on stock 2011 18's.

Anyone with 20x10 wheels and 285's?

I'd like a tad bit narrower tire but I don't want the "SoCal" look.

Your truck looks better and better every time I see it. I really like what you've done with it.

I personally don't think a 20x10 and 285 combo would work out good. Seems like the tire would be a little stretched. I wouldn't go any wider than a 20x9 with a 285. A 285 is what....11.5" wide or so?

Height will depend on rim size. The first number represents the width of the tire in mm I believe. The second number is a proportion of the first and will help to determine side wall height.

For example 305/70 r 20 :

305/25.4 = 12.008 inches wide.

12.008 x .70 (second number in the tire size as a decimal) = 8.4.

8.4 is the height of one half of the tires sidewall.

You have top and bottom sidewall, so you double the 8.4 = 16.8

Take the sidewall height, and add rim diameter (20), and you have a tire that is almost 37 inches tall (36.8).

That tire on 18's would be 34.8" tall, on 16's would be 32.8" tall.

Yeah...that's really narrow for a 10" wide wheel. I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that but I know plenty of people run 12.50's on 12" wide wheels.

I have this setup on my truck, the only difference is my wheels are 08 Harley wheels. It rubbed on my stock radius arms but not enough to notice until you crawled under the truck and actually saw it. I put OUO Adjustable Link Arms on it and it rubs pretty good at full lock now.

33x12.50 on those wheels work stock height. That's the setup in running now.

Think level and trimming or 4" lift to fit the 35"s

I like them a lot. They ride great with minimal road noise. Time will tell on how long they last

My tires are starting to see the miles adding up and now I'm looking for options. I have a 2.5 level kit on the front of my 08 F250 and a 5.5 inch block on the back. Truck sits 43.5 inches to the top of the fender in the front and 44.5 inches in the back. I'm running 35X13.5s on a 10 inch rim that stick out about 3 inches with a back space of 4 inches. I did have to push back the back wall to keep it from rubbing.

Does going up to a 37x12.5 seem to be an option or 13.5 on an 8 inch wide rim and back space closer to 5 inch. Or, Just stick with 35X13.5 MTATZs again.

Any thoughts?

I would think a 35x12.50 tire on a 20x10 rim would look best and have no rubbing.

I'm running 35 x 13.5 on a 10 inch rim and have no rubbing now. Thought about taller. Stock tires were 34+ on 20s.

Jeremy I have to say i love the way ur truck looks. It makes me want to go back down to stock and get wider tires and rims. Very nice job. I wish i could see it in person. Like they say black is beautiful.

This set-up would look awesome on yours the height that it is at now. They would actually stick out a inch further on each side due to 05+ trucks having a wider axle width.

I wish i could have those tires. I had two choices when i did mine expensive rims or tires. I went with rims. Im right at NJs limit for tire sticking out and im pushing it with these tires. But i still kick myself everytime i see his truck. To me that is the down right killer look. Especially since its black.

WV doesn't care how wide.. but everytime I see his it makes me hate the fact I went 10 wide in those wheels.

Very true. I dont get alot of stuff down my truck. I guess probably because of the ATs. But in the rain its bad. Nobody can drive behind me cause of the spray, its pretty funny. Plus coming to a stop i get a rooster tail coming up next to the fenders.

Thanks for all the kind words guys!!! I have the same issues with water and other things being flung up the side of the truck. Hell, the dog's face gets soaked hanging out the window when it's wet out .

But after it is all said and done I am glad I went with the 12 wide and no flares. The side of the truck isn't chipped up or anything... Just hard to keep the wheels clean.

Thanks again!!

Okay so I'm wanting run 20x12 Moto metal 962's with a 35x12.50 tire. The offset offered is a -44mm I'm doing a 2.5" leveling kit with a 350 block in the rear on my 07 f250... Will these wheels work or am I gonna have to go 4" of lift?

A 12 wide with -44 offset I think will fit with just a leveling kit. I have 33x13.50's with -44 offset on stock suspension and it fits with minor trimming.

I think with a leveling kit you'd be fine. I haven't personally done it though.

It doesn't rub the leaf spring on mine (33x13.50r20) if that is what you are worried about.

Well that's all I'm really worried about I have coil front so I don't want it hitting the radius arm

35x12.50 r20 20x12 fuel throttle and mickey thompson atz.

I wouldnt go any narrower than the.12 wide(-44offset) on a 99-04 superduty. The axles are narrow and the wheel barely sticks out.

Heres a couple more just for the hell of it. Two are showing stickout. The other is showing the height difference between a 35" baja atz(unmounted) and a 37" baja claw(on the truck). The claws have 25k uncorrected odometer miles on them, fwiw.

Sorry if Im derailing or sucking up bandwidth!

I ordered them. I had em mount a 12.5 and a 13.5. The 13.5 according to mickey thompson is only 3/4" wider. 12lbs heavier per tire and another 80 bucks. Im happy where I landed.

Do they make a 35x15.5? I know they make a 36x15.5 cuz Ive ran them. My 39s were 15.5 wide too.

I like your truck and stance.Jeremy but.I think it.wouldnt work for me 'round here.

I hear ya. I'm not sure if they do make a 15.50 in a 35.

Only reason I went with the 13.50 is because it gives slightly more sidewall protection for the rim. A 12.50 kinda puts the rim further out than the tire, and I have to parallel park everyday... Didn't wanna risk scraping the rim on the curb. 13.50 has saved me the couple times I wasn't payin attention

I like the american racing.ones.buddy! Black with polished lip. Get a cam for 300 I-6, get the head shaved, and put a valvetrain in it, a header and you'll have a torquey beast to.drive.around.for.maybe 1500 bucks.

Widest and tallest for 6" lift is probably a 22x14 and a 37x15.50 or 13.50 tire

I did 40x15.5 on 16x12s on a 6" lift.

The 37 is probably "ideal". I love my 35s though. If I wanted something.wider Id get a 36x15.5r20 maybe on a 14" wheel. 37s are the point where the tires feel like a.huuuge drag. Cuz they are.

I've got 10 in wide rims and I'm running 285/75r16. What is the widest tire I can run with a stock suspension? I wouldnt mind going shorter but I like the way this size fills the wheel wells.

Depends how much you want to trim the inner fender liners. I have a 12" wide rim with 13.5" wide tires (325/50r20). I did have to trim the driver side fender well to stop rubbing. Completely stock suspension, doesn't rub leaf springs.

Do you know the weight rating or the part number for the 5.4 coils you used? Throwing around a few ideas of what to do but need more clarification.

They'll fit just fine with a little trimming. I ran that setup for a little while.

Thanks, just keep going back and forth since my rear springs are going to be rated so much higher than the 5.4 coils. Don't know how the ride will be

I have a 3.5" PMF block, PMF traction bars, PMF 3-link, and PMF 2" leveling kit sitting in my garage waiting to go on. I'll more than likely be putting my 20x10 SOTA's back on (running factory 20's at the moment) and I'm trying to decide what tire to go with. I'm looking for a 35" tire in an A/T. I've had Toyo Open Country A/T 325/60/20's before and liked them a lot. I don't want Terra Grapplers. I don't like the side wall pattern (I'm picky).

Anyone have any recommendations for a good, long lasting A/T? My truck gets a lot of miles put on it, especially on the highway. Thanks for any input!

I think I'll be going with the general grabber(idk if it's considered mt or at), or the ATZ next go around.

I love my grabbers. They ride great and don't have much noise at all. They look killer as well, the trick gets compliments all the time on the tires and wheels

Well I thought I lucked out and was able to snag a set of novakanes off ebay from top gun customz but after calling they said it was a mistake with the posting and they wouldn't be available until August, they did give me $150 back off the price for the screw up but now my plans have been screwed up for my 3 week leave. My question is will 33" tires on the stock 18" steels rub with 5.4 coils? I'm going to be running fox shocks 5.4 coils no block in the rear and PMF stage 3 bars and eventually the 20x10 stealth novikanes with nitto 420's. for now the stock wheels rattle canned black will have to do as long as they won't rub. Thanks

Hey Jeff, X2 on the Hankook Dynapros. Have a set of them in 35's with 60k miles on them and they still have at least if not more than half the tread left. Almost all highway miles though.

Also does anybody know what it will take to run 37x12.50x20 on a 20x10 -24mm on a 2012 6.7?? My dad wants to run them but wants the smallest lift height it will take to clear them....

Exclamation 325/60/20 with 20x9 +12 offset?

2007 f250 outlaw, K have the tires, have the ballistic jester 20x9 with the +12 offset on 325/60/20s mounted. I have a readylift sst kit that will add a tire of 37's but the 35's are rubbing. I have read others with the exact same kit I have running the same size tires on 8.5"rims with No rubbing. So I assume it's the offset. Readylift said 0 offset will work and the +12's wouldn't no matter if I got a bigger lift, but I've been told by others to do anything from 0 to 32 offset would work. Do I need to get wheel adapters/or spacers? Or just trim the plastic rubbery crap under the wheel well which I assume the shop means when they say it is rubbing....yeah sorry for all the questions, I'm frustrated as hell cause I love these rims and everyone keeps tellin me something different....plus I've had a bit to drink,, Help!!! Which offset will work and Why won't the +12 work!

I have Goodyear Duratracs (325/60/20) on my truck right now with 50k on them and I know I'll get at least another 10k out of them. I'm like you, a lot of highway driving. (180 miles a day) But to warn you, they seem to wander more than normal, I'll probably go back to BFG after these. But they do hold up, look great and have great traction.

Anyone think I would have issues running a 295/60/20 Nitto Terra Grappler on a 20x10 wheel? My PMF stuff should go on this week and these tires on my factory 20's still have a lot of life left in them. I'm thinking about pulling them off of the factory 20's and running them. Save some money you know?

I looked on Nitto's site and they are showing 8.5-10.0 for wheels, so I would be on the maxed out end of wheel width for tire. I assume this shouldn't be a problem?

They will work just fine Jeff. Wheel width isn't gonna hurt anything. Should help tires continue to wear evenly too.

Should also give the truck a nice stance with that tire wheel set up. Not too wide but not narrow either.

If I want to run a 12in wide wheel would that be possible at stock height and if so what width tire would it need to be?

2000 f250 with 07 front end. Completely stock suspension.
Good bit of rubbing left front inner fender liner. Cut about 5-6 inches off to ensure no rubbing. Right fender liner almost never rubs except on uneven ground and at full lock.

I should add that the tires stick out 2-3 inches past the fenders.

What about 20"x12" BMF Novakanes and then something like a 36"x13"wide20 or 36"x14"wide20 on my truck?

I think that would look good. Im closing in on needing tires again and am so ready to get rid of the terra grapplers...setup now is 18x10 Diamo Karat (dont know the offset not sure) and LT325x65.

All opinions welcome. Thanks in advance.

Im thinking if i dont get new wheels i will just go with the Toyo OC M/T 315x70R18's (says that tire is like a 36"x13"R18). Because aparently Toyo doesnt build a 325....in The M/T

they would great IMO. I'm direct with fuel if you'd like pricing. I think 12 wide is a must
