I inherited my truck when my father-in-law passed, it's a 2008 Lariat 250. I thought everything was perfect but couldn't believe how heavy the tailgate was... well I never thought to look for any cause, just assumed it was heavy due to the step.

Due to a project at work I was researching tailgate assists and saw many had built in torsion bars to help with the weight... I went out and took my gate off and pulled out half a broken torsion rod.

Well come to find out it's VERY easy to fix and the part was around $127 from the dealer but can be found online for around $83. Part 402A68 (make sure you get the one with step or without depending on your truck). Just LOOSEN (do not remove) 2 little bolts and slide out the other half, then align the flat on the new rod toward the bottom of the gate and slide it in. Keep it aligned and tighten the bolts...

Nice fix! IMO these tailgates are no where near as heavy as my 2001 rangers tailgate. It's like aluminum vs steel in weight difference

Do you have to remove the tailgate to do the replacement?
