Ok I may be crazy but have looked for this answer and can't find it anywhere.

I've had my truck since new and it lost alot of weight about 60k miles ago. I have noticed that when the temperature is below freezing the turbo vanes cycle. Boost will go down to .45psi then after about 10 seconds of idling you can hear the vanes adjust and the boost goes to 1.45psi or so. When throttle is applied to leave the light it's instant response and runs just as good as always with no turning surge or anything.

Once the temperature gets to about 34 degrees Fahrenheit the turbo doesn't cycle at all and at idle holds around 1.45 psi.

Anyone know why I'm seeing this? Is it normal or is it something in the turbo telling me it's about to fail.

Thanks for your thoughts!

It's normal. Loud and angry when cold haha.
It's crazy that I'm just realizing it's done this. After 5 years you'd think I'd have saw it.
I replaced the water pump and started watching my monitor closer to make sure temps were good and that's when I saw the turbo cycling. I figured it was a cold weather program to keep the vanes from getting sooted up.

First cold day after mine lost weight it startled me when I started it from in the house. Thing was just screaming. Once my coolant gets up to about 60 it stops and cycles as normal at operating temperature.

Yeah mine screams like crazy too on a cold start lol. Then like you say at around 60 coolant temp it gets a little quieter. I just think it's weird that even after coolant temp gets to 189 and thermostat has opened, if the ambient air temperature is below freezing it cycles but it air temps are above 34 degrees it doesn't cycle anymore.

Mine will cycle at idle no matter the air temp once the coolant is up. But I have the gh stuff on the X4, I also have the vanes closed at idle so that's why mine cycles all the time.

I guess I should call and get an update then on my GH tunes haha. I have the X4 as well and mine don't cycle at idle. I helped a buddy lose some weight about 2 years after I lost mine and his cycled at idle.

Man, that turbo whine at idle doesn't drive you nuts? I would have gotten that tune changed a long time ago. My $.02 anyway lol

Haha. I guess since it's always been that way because at the time the tunes weren't there for anything else I've gotten use to it. Plus everyone says it lives up to the sounds like a jet plane, pulls like a freight train quote haha.

I just emailed the company about getting an update for the X4.

Hey, what year is your truck and when did you get your Jenny Craig plan with the X4 option?

I called today and talked with the weight loss specialists to see why your truck and several others I know of cycle and rumble at idle and mine don't.

They said I must have been one of the first to order from them, before they had the turbo vanes programing figured out all the way. They said nor it's standard to send tunes with the "rumble" sound at idle instead of the "hiss".
