Default Would you take a leap on a 6.4?

I think this is the right spot for this

I'll try to make it quick.
Never owned a 6.4. I hear horror stories from most people. I have had a few 6.0's that have been fine.
Found what looks like a good deal. Oklahoma truck, looks to be rust free, inside is mostly intact, body looks to be in decent shape. Never looks like it has been tuned. 164k.

OK service records on the carfax. Transmission replaced it looks like 100k ago. Single owner.

It's also never going to be my only truck. It will suck if it blows the engine, but I will still have any of my other work trucks, and my GMC.

It also won't be my daily. I'll drive it as often as possible, but I'm keeping my rusty old yukon to soak up the salt.

Oh and it's still in OK. I'd have it shipped, or possibly fly out with a friend or two and drive it back (I drive MA to FL (~24 hours) a few times a year for work and vacations, so that's not an issue unless I blow it up on the drive)

If I can get them down to a better price (already good, looking for great) should I go for it?

As long as it a play truck and you have 10k in disposable income to fix it then go for it. Better off spending a few more thousand $ and get a 6.7 even if it is a 11 or 12 with 200k miles. Unless the 6.4 truck is less than 10k I would run away. I had a 6.4 truck for 3 days. Luckily the deal didn't go through for me. It was however a horror story for my cousin that bought it.

Definitely go get it!
Its single owner, big plus and if you can get service records to show oil changes, maint. that would be great. If the truck has bad maint. records I would pass also. Love the 6.4, turning 180K on mine!
Good luck!

I never had any issues with mine, i changed my rockers at 150k when i did the single turbo swap and they were all fine still, one was a little worn. I bought mine under warranty and sold it 4.6 years later after putting over 90k on it. No head studs needed. 2010’s had better gaskets. And few other things that were updated, i’d stick with an 09-10. But if i were to do all over again, i’d buy a 14-15 6.7 and enjoy it.

Yeah I did that, in case anyone is wondering.

Bought it, went out to bring it back, made it 800 miles and lost a turbo.

Mid rebuild right now, will make a build thread when it's back together.
Turbos, head work, rockers, studs, all gonna be minty.

Thanks, I'm trying. It seems like every time I'm getting ready to out it back together I notice another issue. Someone definitely had this apart before, and not a mechanic, as evidenced by the silicone in the oil pump and the cage nuts broken loose inside the cab. There was no major work reported save for a new trans under warranty on the car fax.
I see a little silicone under the HPFP too but at this point I'm not taking anything more off. I'm a little fed up haha. So many issues, it's like the dealer got it on trade, took pictures of it, and parked it on the lot. Needed tires when I picked it up, and it's apparent that nobody ever opened the hood once while it was on the lot.

I'm looking to get a core motor and build a badass street motor as time and money permits at some point but for now I just want to drive it. I've put less than 1000 miles on it and none of that was in my home state.

Hey, live and learn. I could have bought a Civic but where's the fun in that? It's what I wanted, and I'm getting to learn a lot as I go. I'll always have the story to tell of four days no sleep, getting bumped to first class (and sleeping through all of it) and the drive through the smokeys on I-40 to get it, and seeing a lot of the country I never had got to before.
And when it's done I'm fairly certain it'll be reliable, and pulling it all apart will go quicker next time if I have to tear it down again.

If I was really hurting for a vehicle I'd slam a tranny in my old yukon that's sitting behind my shop right now, but I've got my work truck to get me to school and to work so I don't mind.

***as reliable as a 6.4 can be

Like I said Iím looking for a decent block to build on my bench for a project. This motor is being built under the gun, and on a really tight budget. I wasnít planning on going his far into a rebuild.
