What are the stock connecting rods good for in terms of horsepower? I am building up a block for my future race truck (still searching for a suitable/affordable truck). I want this engine to be able to make serious power but I do want to keep it on a budget, Carillo rods or RCD's rods are seriously expensive.

My machinist is looking into other options for rods and pistons.

It will be getting a stage 2 Colt cam.

I am also interested in hearing some engine paint scheme suggestions.

I've always heard 700 to the wheels.

I'm not sure what the 6.0 rods are made of but you always hear of 7.3 guys cryo treating theirs, just not sure if it would benefit the stock 6.0 rods or not.

Serious power and budget do not go together.

If you are building an engine and shooting for any kind of serious hp... do not skimp on the connecting rods. If one pops out, you will be re-paying for all of the same stuff over and over.

Budget doesn't necessarily mean cheap. Cost effective is more what I meant. Thanks for the link, those are a bit better priced.

You have to understand, I am used to people coming in wanting to make 600 hp without spending 10k to support it.

I like hypermax stuff, always top of the line.

If you were aiming @ 700 RWHP... just use a stock block and roll. By the time you chuck a rod you'll have a pile of runs under your belt and just chuck another stock block in. A nice block and installed yourself will be cheaper then those rods & machine work alone!

Looking at Hypermax's site made me think, What about gaskets? I'll be using ARP 625's, are fire-ringed or o-ringed heads still necessary?

I've been thinking of Ford blue, but I think I want two colors, even if one is a metallic.

O-rings are pretty cheap insurance, single turbo setups are a a lot easier on rods and gaskets as well.. Quick spooling high torque setups will bend rods at lower hp levels

What cab configuration truck is this going in and what do you want to run?

Since you're building a "race engine" I'm gonna guess you at least want 10s.

If 10's are in the plans then rods shouldn't be a question, and forget about the budget part.
Idk Mike Dominguez went 10.80 with a barder 68 and spray. In a regular cab with say an s475, a 4r100 and slicks on all four corners I think rods could last. I mean really when is the last time somebody actually broke rods on a 6liter?

Put rods in... I bought a 6.0 with some decent miles didn't know history of engine built top end injectors, turbo, studs, valve train etc... Figured would be fun to daily drive and race some around 700hp. 18 miles in spun rod bearing and threw rod through the block.

Didnt mpd bend the rods on their project 6.0 with a 371?

If you're going to spend the money on building a motor it would really hurt if you bent or broke rods, but if you were just going to slap studs and a big turbo on an existing running motor I would say run her until she gives.
