I in a bit of mess with my personal truck. The original heads were cracked beyond use, so a traded around and got a pair of good heads from a friend of mine. Sent them to the machine shop for a valve job, new seals, ect. When I went to install them last night we realized I had a one 18mm 03 head and one 20mm 07(?) head.

Before things get bolted down, I would like to know if the oil rails, rockers, ect will work. I was lucky and got the 06 rocker box with the head....but that is all.

If anyone is wondering, the only reason this damn thing still has a 6.0 is because I want to sell it and build other toys.

The heads are directly interchangeable. You just need one headgasket for a 20mm head and one for an 18mm head. Everything else will be fine. You won't use the majority of the bolts that bolt the rocker carrier to the head as well on the newer head.

That doen't make sense, the block and gasket are both for 18mm dowles and the gasket is locating fine. Since the head is 20mm I cannot precicly locate it on gasket.

I do know the rocker box does not interchange, I read that the injector hold down bolts and clamps are different. Possibly rockers and glow plugs? And I read of a stepped dowel for this situation but I cannot find it.

You'll need one 20mm gasket like I said. It'll come with the stepped dowel to fit the 20mm head.

The rocker box will interchange but all the bolts won't be needed. Only difference in any of the injector hold downs is the torx size of the bolt

Rockers are the same. Glowplugs for the later model might be a different length. I think I read that but unsure

Glow plugs are different, but as long as you have the 8 that came out of your truck, just use those 8 again. They'll fit into any of the heads. Like webb06 said, just order a 20mm gasket at the dealer. It will have the dowels to step down to the 18mm block.

I was under the impression the injector hold downs were actually different, but never had my hands on them.

Just an FYI, the rocker boxes DO NOT INTERCHANGE. Dowel pins and bolt holes will not allow it.

So you're telling me that if an 03 truck has a bad head, and you were to buy a new/reman head from ford which are now only 20mm down size that you would have to change the rocker box? I don't believe that to be true

only thing you will have to reuse is the glow plug(03-04 glow plugs are longer), and you will need the 20mm dowels, thats it. the 04.5-07 glow plugs are shorter.

I stand corrected on the injector hold downs. For the 20mm heads (model years 06-10) the injector hold downs are different even part numbers. I'll have some in my hands tomorrow because I have a truck in the shop that had a new head put on by another shop that didn't use the new style hold down with the new 20mm head. I have a couple videos and tomorrow I'll have some pictures to share

Early on left. Late on right

Quite a bit longer and the torx is a 45 rather than 40 on late model

The bolt holes actually line up, but the the 20mm head has larger bolts and alignment dowles. I suppose it will fit but the prospect of not being aligned doesnt sit well with me.

I know it'll fit because I just did one yesterday. But if you want to replace the rocker box then go ahead.

I had a free rocker box, so I used it. Also, milling the overall length of the stepped dowels down about 2mm on the 20mm end so I could use the 18mm gasket.
