03 turbo Question

Can you take a look at this video and tell me if this turbo was just rebuilt. The guy i bought it from claims it was freshly rebuilt and is supposed to be like that.

it is hard to tell from the video... are you pushing in and out or side to side?

A little side to side is ok (some of it will go away once the oil fills the turbo)

In and out is really bad.


I have seen many "rebuilt" turbos with worn out backing plates. If the backing plate is worn then no rebuild kit will help. You have to replace the backing plate

moving it side to side and if you look closely you can see it touch the housing.

touching the housing is not good news. If you are able i would pull the turbo apart and check out the internals.

The thrust collar should not move around in the backing plate. Also if it is freshly rebuilt it will be pretty obvious when you open it up
