Anyone ever seen something like this? Dad had been having a transmission leak and it was finally tracked down to this hole in the top of the housing. Best we can figure it was just a bad spot in the casting that flaked out finally. This tranny has a little over 200k on it, so can't really complain. It's been tig welded up and is headed back in now. Just wondering if anyone else ever came across something like this.

What year is the trans? The 2005 model year had a problem with the snap ring coming out of the reverse clutch and leaving the trans by going through the case.

Same thing happened to my fathers old 05. Same placement and same size hole. Right over 100k miles

Did you figure out anything that caused it? Did you weld it up like we did or just replace it?

No reverse could be a symptom. It is possible that enough of the ring stays in place to hold the clutch together.

Reverse is still there right now and the transmission seems to be working fine. I guess we'll have to keep an eye on it and see what happens.

Reverse clutch snap ring punched a hole. As soon as the incident happened the trans was replaced. Couldn't chance it with a truck that pulled a 40ft 5th wheel.

Well something ended up letting go in the trans. It worked good for a month after the hole was repaired but sitting at a red light the other day it suddenly lost everything. No forward or reverse. New Ford reman is going in now.

Might want to check for open campaigns, its kind of cloudy in my mind at the moment but there was a recall on these transmissions for this concern, but it was somewhat specific as to the year/model range, if I recall rightly.

Recall was only on snow plow prep package truck in 2005.

same issue. the letter states when the snap ring would easily pop out.

the heavy snap ring supplied in the sk5r110w transgo kit will solve this issue. its 400 percent stronger then factory.

There was no recall. There was a customer satisfaction campaign, which is different than a recall. Recalls are good forever. Customer satisfaction campaigns expire. This campaign expired September 30, 2006.

The reason they only included snow plow prep trucks is that they thought that only those trucks would do enough reverse engagements to have the problem. The bad snap ring was in ALL TorqShift transmissions built during that period.

Some do, some do not. Some outsource the teardown to a transmission shop. Some only remove and replace transmissions. Every Ford dealer is an independent business. They are not Ford Motor Company. You can't say what one Ford dealer does is what they all do.
