Does the early model 99 7.3 have a OBD 1 or OBD 2?

Neither one, really. More OBDII than OBDI. A cheap scanner will do you no good. Parts store scanners are no help. You need a good scanner. Diesels were not required to adhere to the OBD rules back than.

AE or above for a real scanner, I have heard of some apps that will work.

Anything 1996 and newer have OBDII ports. Most 1995's do as well. However, as Arisley stated, generic OBDII compliance was not used on the 7.3L. You need a scan tool with a Ford Enhanced package built in to pull most codes and data.

Most guys don't start touching them until stuff starts wearing out (injectors, HPOP, turbo, etc). Normally around 200K.

or 70k like my dually... lol.. oring issues started it all... prolly still be stock if they didnt give up...

Lol, if only you would've spent the 100 bucks in orings and install the stock injectors back....
