I've been helping him with his truck some. No issues with cold starting at all. Truck runs completely fine until oil temp gets up to about 175 and the truck will die like you turned the key off. Does so without warning, no missing or running rough at all before it happens. After it dies the truck will not fire back up until it cools down almost completely. After it did it the first time I swapped the IPR with a reman and it ran fine with no issues for about two weeks and now its back to the same thing. I don't have my laptop/AE here at the moment to check the logs but if I remember correctly it was developing 100 to 150 psi ICP while cranking and the duty cycle would gradually climb to upwards of 50-60%. Not five minutes before it died last time the ICP got up to and held 2800psi+ on hard acceleration.

When time allows I'll get the valve covers off and see if I can spot where the oil is going, whether it is an outer injector o-ring or one of the injectors sticking and dumping the oil. Whats getting me is the issue going away for two weeks and coming back again. If it was an injector or o-ring issue I would have thought it would have stayed consistent rather than running fine after swapping the IPR. No signs of oil in the fuel bowl btw.

Truck has a somewhere around 215,000 miles on it, stock as far as I can tell but may have some sort of programmer on it, nothing in the PCM at least. When the HPOP was replaced the old IPR was re-used, replacement IPR we put in was a re-manufactured unit. Have swapped the ICP sensor and cleaned the plug and he has swapped the CPS with no change, truck does read rpm when cranking. I did check the ICP with a gauge and it is accurate.

Where he got the reman'd pump and IPR:

Pull the reman IPR and check the o-rings. Not a bad idea to replace them. That is the easy first step.

If that checks out, I would say injector o-rings for sure.

Ive never had any luck taking an old IPR apart and cleaning it. Definitely never heard of one being rebuilt-- they do wear out beyond service. I'd replace it then watch it some more on the scanner/datalogger.

I just used the complete dieselorings kit on my 7.3 and I also completely took the IPR apart, cleaned, and reassembled it. Working like a champ with no leaking whatsoever.

That being said, if its not leaking, I'd be looking at injector o-rings as well...

The only time I have had luck cleaning an IPR was when I had one that was sticky. Buddy thought as long as he kept it full of oil and changed the filter once a year, his oil was good.

Took the IPR apart, it was all gummed up. Soaked it overnight in carb cleaner, wiped it all down with clean diesel. Reassembled it and it was fine.

Most of the time, IPR's are worn out, only way to rebuild them properly, would require a really, really good machine shop, and a guy that is a really, really good machinist.
You would have to rebore, and then fabricate a new piston. To really close tolerances. A new IPR would be cheaper.

We finally got back working on the truck last night we got the injectors pulled out. A quick look inspection after pulling them no blown rings they do look to be stock O-rings. should be back at it tonight for further inspections
