DEF Refill

I bought my '16 back in Oct '15 and put only 1400 miles on and it sits inside my shop as I have two other vehicles to drive. I was driving approximately 2 months ago and I got a 300 miles left on DEF fluid message. I check the fluid level on the Info Message Center and it said I was below 1/2 tank.

I refilled it today and it took the 2.5 gal jug. I turn the key on and check the message center and it still said that it was below 1/2 tank. I stuffed another gallon of DEF, filling it to the rim. I check the message center again and it still says below 1/2 tank. After stuffing the DEF in, I just started the truck but didn't drive it.

I have to leave on Monday to go the Southwest towing a trailer. I don't want to go into limp mode while towing with the ECM thinking that the DEF is empty while it's full.

How long does it take to reset? Or are the level sensors shot?

My 15 does this if you run it out and only put one 2.5 gallon container in it.

So do I wait for it to reset? I do have access to IDS software but need to get it done ASAP.

That .org link got me really confused.

It takes some time for the amount left to actually be accurate after a fill. Check it every thousand miles or so on the instrument cluster and never put in more than 2.5gals unless filing at a def pump. The pickup will run even though it's not topped off and you always have plenty of notice to pick some up.

Mine only ever goes back to the 500 miles remaining message on the dash if I only put 2.5 gallons in. It will not clear unless I fill it
