Buddy of mine has an 05 and is getting a constant smell of exhaust in the cab. When it goes into high idle it sounds like an air leak. He wants more opinions than mine so I'm posting up here for more advice. How often do down pipes crack? He's gonna check the manifold and exhaust pipe tonight again.

Truck has 86k. Tuned with canned SCT tunes at 80k, 5in exhaust, and a deleted EGR.

Yup, what those guys said. What kind of EGR delete setup is in there? Does it have the stock up-pipe with the EGR cooler deleted? I see these and the pipes almost always crack after this is done.

If you go to change it, put in an upgraded like the ones Cutting Edge or some of the others sell. I just got a nice one from CenTex Diesel that I should be putting on this weekend.

That's the y-pipe up above, which can also crack, but that wouldn't alleviate a crack on the stock up-pipe if that's what's happening. Guess they'll just have to look and see exactly where it's leaking.

One thing I have seen from time to time is if the turbo's vanes are sticking it will cause high back pressure causing the up-pipes to lead a shorter life.

FYI.

That's because I have the egr delete solid pipe already. :D You can get the uppipes with or without that section.

We have no idea. His dad had it done while he had it. He sold it to my buddy a few years later. I would be confident to say its just the delete with the stock pipe.

Are the cracks visible or does he have to replace them to see the problem?

If it's cracked you can usually find a spot covered in soot. Might be hard to see back there though. You should be able to see if it's got the solid up-pipe or not though. Might be easier to yank the inner fender liner on the passenger side to see what's going on in there. Some people will feel back there with their hands to feel if it's leaking air or not. Make sure you do that on a cold motor that you just started though haha.

Cool. I'll let him know, Mike. Maybe I will even tell him to do it cold, lol.

I reach my hand up rub on the bellows one at a time and see if any soot is on my hand after. You can also break boost it with the hood up and see if smoke comes up. It is kinda hard to do that on the stock tune tho.
