Higher Gear

04 F-250.

I'm thinking I want a higher Gear, for Fuel Millage and to compensate for the lower profile tires.

What Rear end is in this truck? And what is the highest Stock Gear available?

Randy's say its a Ford 10.25, But I was thinking it was a Sterling?

You have a Ford/Sterling 10.5 not 10.25, that was in the older trucks. You should have a 3.73 in there now. The 10.5 and 10.25 have interchangeable differentials, and even though the 10.5" has a larger stock ring gear, 10.25 or 10.5 ring and pinions will fit.

They may have listed the 10.25 because I believe that is what is in the F150/F250 light duty 7 lug truck, not the Super Duty.

I'm going to crawl under it and hope the tag is still on it so I can be sure it's a 3.73 so I can swap it for a 3.55. I think the truck will work better with that gear.

If you're going through all the trouble of swapping gears, I'd at least go to 3.31's. A 0.18 ratio change just doesn't seem worth the effort.

Agreed, if just doing the change for mileage reasons, it will never be worth it just going from 3.73 to 3.55, 3.31 is a little better.

You can just read the axle code on the door jamb to see what you already have as well. Likely 3.73s

Not all trucks have it on the door jamb, the Axle code area is blank on my door jamb tag.

As far as I know it was either trucks manufactured in 2000 or 2000 model year trucks that did not have the axle code on the door jamb. but don't quote me on that.

The only options he really has is 3.73's and 4.10's in the factory axles

Yep, my truck is a 2000, manufactured in late 1999 so you could be correct about that. And yea, 3.73 is probably it, I think 4.10 was only available in F350 behind a diesel but I could be wrong on that.
