That seams to be pretty hot, i would shoot it with a temp gun and find out for sure.

I would imagine anything over 200 would start hurting electronics but i dunno, my old 7.3 ran hot as *** too so maybe thats how it is, but that truck went thru 4 alternators in the time i owned it

What does your engine temp run at? If you're seeing engine temps in the low 200's then that thing could be just as hot...Oh, hell you're in Texas to boot!!

Time for a heat extractor in the hood?

The one in my 04 got like that so I had it rebuilt and it never got hot on me again. It was only $60 to get it rebuilt also so I definitely wouldn't buy a new one.

I used to go to a guy in Batavia, il and he would rebuild starters and alternators for 45 bucks. I bought a new one and then had him rebuild the old one. The new one spun the motor over a lot faster than the rebuild. It did work though! Id imagine an alternator would be less critical.

Mine get's too hot to touch too, but it's been over 100 deg. for 60 something days so pretty much anything under the hood is too hot to touch if the engine has been running for any length of time. For that matter, if I park in the sun with the engine off, the hood is too hot to touch too.

Get some actual temp readings to be sure you even need something done. I'll try and remember to shoot my alternator tomorrow and see what temps I get. When it's time for a rebuild, just google alternator and starter rebuild in your area and you should get some hits.

Drove about 2 1/2hrs with a 15 minute stop at Wally World for oil and I was reading 185* when I hit it with my infrared. Just as a comparison, the idler pulley was also 185* and the ambient air temp was around 92*. BTW, spit did not boil off.

6.0 with the small case alternator are notorious for running hot
A good upgrade is going to a large case

I have actually had the best luck with there altenators and startors. after going thru multiple napa and auto value ones over the years I started using autozone ones.I have had great luck with multiple vehicles and there startors and altenators.. Those are two things I only buy from crapzone.
