Is there any point in this protector?

Mine broke on disassembly
And I was fixin to weld it back together

But I'm starting to wonder if it's even necessary.

I really don't see the point.

Thoughts?

I think the idea was to protect the valve cover gasket from exhaust heat. Never seen one personally. Lol

I don't think it's needed. I think it was there to protect it during installation, although the exhaust heat might be a better explanation. My 94's broke too, but the piece was a little longer. When I rotated the nut the whole stud turned and opened a nice slot in my valvecover like a can opener! Cheers!
