Sigh, had a long response typed and got wiped out...we'll try this again... Got the SD S300 turbine and 360 degree rebuild kit from KCTurbos and they arrived Friday. Did the install yesterday with great success, about 4 hours to go from running to running including a quick lunch break. The KCTurbos kit is very nice and packaged very well. It is not the most inexpensive kit out there but a very nice kit none the less. Although I have rebuilt this turbo before I always like to have instructions on hand just to verify my memory and have to give RiffRaff credit for an excellent write up on the rebuild process. The turbine itself is noticeably heavier in hand than the stock turbine but, like others, I don't have the proper scale to measure the difference. Otherwise it looks exactly like what's in the pictures on the KCTurbos website. First impressions... Spool Up: Quicker spooling and smoother spooling. When accelerating in O/D (ZF-6) from 1500 rpm I would have a second or two of slow spool then the turbo would light and my boost gauge would jump to what boost I was asking for with my right foot. Now, the turbo immediately begins to build boost and smoothly builds to desired levels (how hard I am on the throttle). Even in second and third gear, while empty, it builds more boost than the old turbine that would build almost no boost (no real load on it). In short, quicker spool and smoother spool - good stuff. Smoke: Greatly reduced! In the O/D accelerating scenario I described above I would have some black smoke until the turbo lit then it would clean to a slight haze. Now I have a small haze on acceleration that very quickly clears completely. A big and welcome difference. More good stuff. Shifting: Interesting - the heavier turbine carries more momentum and the boost does not fall off nearly as much in between shifts. This was noticeable enough that I am working on changing my usual shift points. On my first drive I would let the clutch out like I normally would and the truck would almost lurch forward because the turbo was still spinning and engine was making more power than I was used to. A good problem to have especially when pulling loads through the mountains like I usually do. Shut down: As noted by others, you can hear the turbo spinning for a noticeable longer time after shutting the engine down. I have already had general public look at my truck and wonder what the sound was after I shut it off. All-in-all a very nice upgrade! I really like the smooth turbo action now, immediate response, and significant reduction in smoke. All good!
