I'm looking at a 6.0 Excursion at a used car dealer. It is exactly the one I want for the price I can swing. The engine runs absolutely perfect except it seems to be low on power. No codes, no smoke. ipr rose nicely to 75% or so and the icp corresponded to 3500 psi or so before I had to back it down on a busy highway. Do these numbers seem o.k? ficm was over 48 volts whenever I looked. I drove a stock 6.0 pick-up today just for comparison and there seemed to be quite a difference. Research I did said this excursion should do 0-60 in roughly 10 seconds. This one was roughly 14? I really want to buy this X and am willing to fix nearly any issue if I can first find out what it (probably) is. I stopped at Harbor Freight on the way home and bought a fuel pressure gauge to test that next (with the dealer's permission). I sure would appreciate any thoughts on what the issue might be and any resulting advice on how to check it, etc. Thanks.

Might just be something simple like the map hose port on the manifold clogged, epb tube sooted up, maybe the turbo vanes sticking a little?

No blow by, degas clean, temp delta 2-3 degrees.
If it was turbo vanes sticking a little would I notice more smoke? There was none.

Spoke too soon about blow-by. Maybe I don't know what it is... how do I check for it?

after searching... Is the upside down filler cap the best method (preliminary)?

The dealership is 40 miles away, and I have already made several trips, so I don't really want to go check one thing at a time. Next trip, I will check blow by for sure and fuel pressure (if you recommend it). Is blow-by most likely the problem? If it isn't what else could it be and what should I look for/check etc. Turbo vanes?

Exclusive of what I can do about it, what things might it be most likely be?
At 14 seconds instead of 10, this isn't just in my head is it?

So, I drove there again today and forgot an allen wrench to remove fuel pressure test port plug, but I did check for blow-by. Even when engine was only half warm, there was none detectable.

I was thinking that if there were sticky vanes in the turbo, the audio pitch of the turbo would not have changed at idle when I unplugged the vgt? I suspect the vanes would be such (closed or open?) that they would not allow for low rpm power which is where it seems to be weakest. Are my assumptions correct? Can I rule out the turbo?

If there is low fuel pressure and nothing has been damaged yet, any solution should be fairly straight forward, right? Would the most expensive thing be the fuel pump itself? I don't even have a way of knowing when the fuel filter was last changed.

As far as the ebp sensor/tube being plugged, is it true that it's input is not used in an 03?

I guess I am looking for reassuring opinions that whatever the problem is (if there is one), can in fact be fixed and without breaking the bank...

Thank you so much, this has been very helpful so far.

Allow 4k...... over what you pay for work to get it right.

This. I wish I would have done EGR delete, studs, gaskets, etc. right off the bat when I had my 6.0, ended up costing a whole lot more in the long run by not doing it.

fuel pressure 56 at idle, 50 at WOT.

would sticky vanes give other symptoms given noticeably low power?

So... I did buy this Excursion without knowing the cause, and I finally found it! While following up on advice from '02bigstrokin', I finally got around to first finding, then checking the map hose port on the manifold. When I pulled the hose off the nipple, the other end snapped of the sensor. I think the plastic nipple on the sensor had been cracked and was therefore leaking. After replacing the sensor, it runs MUCH better. It actually downshifts if I floor it! Tomorrow my Atlas 80 arrives... Thanks for the help.
