New 7.3L Owner

Hi everyone,

I just bought an 2003 E450 with the 7.3L Powerstroke. I've had some work done to it, but the shop I chose seems to charge quite a bit.

I'm looking for recommendations for diesel mechanics in the San Francisco Bay Area. I used to be a gasoline-engine mechanic, so ideally I could hire someone to help me learn about the 7.3, how to troubleshoot, and how to perform some of the regular maintenance.

If you can work on a gasser, you can work on a 7.3L. We are a great resource here to help you our with anything that comes up. Biggest thing about a 7.3 is parts are bigger and heavier. I still use a 1/4 inch drive ratchet for a lot of stuff on the motor though. Oil changes are the biggest thing you have to worry about. That and keeping the air filter clean and leak free.

There is a plethora of knowledge on a lot of these forums and the web in general. You should have no problem doing most of the work and maintenance on these engines. Having a good scan tool is key though. While it is a bit of an investment, it will pay for itself in the long run.

What are you looking to do to the truck?

Ae does everything its the same as going to fords well pretty much the same except up u still have a wallet after...

It will read/clear codes, run Ford Enhanced tests (injector buzz, cylinder contribution, KOEO/KOER, etc.), datalog to an SD memory card, and you can use it as a standard set of gauges. It will monitor around 250 different PIDs.

What if anything does it do that like a cts2 doesn't?

The CTS will not run the Ford Enhanced tests, and it is very limited to the amount of PIDs you can watch (normally around 20).

Im curious as well with my 96 OBS.

There are quite a few. Upwards of 200. You can even watch trans temp on an OBS with it, unlike most other units (without the use of additional sensors).

Here are all the parameters it pulls for my 2001 7.3L. You should have a good bit of these as well.

Some of these will not have accurate data on all 7.3L trucks (example: coolant temp).
