This is on my 04 f-450 6.0 65k. little to no heat at idle. Truck stays at operating temp at all times. But within a few seconds of the truck being at idle. Heat goes almost cold. Never been an issue in the past. Changed the T stat last year as it stuck open. Also another issue I recently had. Jumped on the highway for a exits with plow and truck was overheating. Temp started to climb quickly. Within a few miles it was getting to the top of the gauge. I pulled over, the temp dropped back to normal in about a minute. very fast. Had to do this twice to get to the next exit. Clutch fan was running the whole time. Same thing I have done since I bought the truck with no issues in the past.

Low coolant would answer both issues, but its right to the top... What am I missing? All maintenance recently done.

I replaced it last winter as the truck would not warm up. I don't know how else to check it other then change it. Truck has held temp just perfect since the day I changed it till I jumped on the highway with the plow. I know that would explain the overheat issue, but what about the heat?

the water pump might be going out. If the impeller is breaking free from the shaft then it could give you poor coolant flow.
How hot is it getting?

I don't have a monitor on that truck as its a work truck. It got hot. Probably enough to scare me if I knew. It sits middle of the stock gauge normally. It moved up about a quarter inch. Then in the next minute under light throttle trying to baby it went close to the red and the check gauge light came on. Never puked at all. No issues since without the plow. But it was never an issue before. Water pump issue would make since.. It only has 65k on it but its almost all city miles towing a 18k trailer with lots of idle time. Probably comparable to a truck with 120k. Water pump would make sense.

might want to check cooling system pressure. could be a weak headgasket.

Trucks has never puked a drop and it gets worked hard daily. I think the head gaskets are still doing good. Also does have a new coolant cap. So the system does hold pressure with no leaks.

It makes sense. Not something I have really heard of being an issue before. My father just told me his 04 f350 with 60k on it is doing the same thing with the heat and the coolant tank is topped off.

My money is on head gaskets, seen this so many times its not even funny.

The truck does not have to puke to have bad gaskets, but it will when it gets bad enough.

Do a chemical test before wasting any time or money changing parts.

Anything else i should change while im at it? obviously the belt. Any other common things? I remember a few pulleys that use to be an issue.

You mean while changing the water pump? If so I would go with Dave's advice first and test the coolant. Cheap and easy way to rule out another possibility.

X2

Chemical test the coolant for combustion gasses. Cheap quick and easy.

And also 6.0L OEM waterpumps are known to fail. The impeller is plastic. You can make your own deductions. Some one makes an upgraded waterpump, better bearings and billet impeller. Bulletproof diesel IIRC.

I will check the coolant. Didn't see his post when i wrote the last one. Head gasket still doesn't explain the no heat issue though.

Im not new to working on these trucks. Did all the work on my 6.4. For some reason it seems the more i learn about the 6.4, the more i forget about the 6.0. I have not personally had a 6.0 For four years. I stopped surfing the 6.0 forums.

Head gasket can cause no heat for sure.

Absolutely. Bad headgaskets cause no heat. Combustion gas Vapor locks the heater core.
