My dad is looking at ordering a new 450 with all the bells and whistles. He's looking at getting either a king ranch or platinum. He likes the Caribou color, but that isn't offered in king ranch or platinum trim. He would have to get a lariat to get that color.

My question is, what is he missing out on with staying with the lariat? Is it pretty much just the KR and Platinum decals? Or are there leather and wheels options he would be missing out on?

Mine is a '13 Lariat Ultimate and my friend has a '13 Platinum. Only differences I see is his heated steering wheel, wheels, grill, tailgate/bedside pieces and Platinum written on his seats. Other then that they are the same trucks.

as mentioned above those are some of the different changes. They also use different leather on the seats. My platinum has a much more plush (soft) leather than a lariat as well as leather trim on the door panels compared to just plastic. Pretty sure the KR also uses a different kind of leather. Platinum has a much darker wood grain on the dash than a lariat. You have the different tailgate on a platinum like mentioned above as well as painted to match bumpers, which was my decision maker personally.

The leather isnt the same? The KR uses aniline leather and the castano (chaparral ) was ditched after the 2010 model year.

Can anybody confirm the leather us actually different? I thought the platinum leather was the same but was more brushed than finished.

The KR leather felt no different to me than the lariat. I like the 15 kr interior. But other than that i like the black/tan lariats. The surfaces are tan but the seat trim and carpet are black.

The leather is one of the bigger concerns. The last time he ordered a truck was in 04. The king ranch leather back then was definitely a lot different than the lariat.

I'm not a huge fan of the platinum tailgate and emblems on the bed sides.

Do they have a lot of wheel options or are they pretty standard with the duallys?

Can you go look at a couple locally? I did.

The platinum seems extremely overpriced for what it is, imo. They are nice trucks but the upcharge seems a bit high for me. Not that I wouldnt buy one but comoared to a lariat, im not seeing the justified upcharge.

Unless you are deadset on the grille and the gate. My buddy got a grey lariat since the platinum didnt come in that color and he painted the bumpers and had a piece of brushed al vinyl put on his tailgate to mimic the platinum when people paint the gate panel and leave just the center showing. I don't care for any of the stock wheels but on a 450 they should all be similar.

A kr 450 would be hard to beat imo.

Ha! Why spend all that money and not get a diesel?

I'll have to ask my dad if he's looked at any in person. If he's dead set on the caribou color I'm gonna tell him to get the lariat and add all the upgrades he wants. If he wants a kr I think either the bronze fire or ruby red would look sharp.

Those are nice. Is that Oxford white?

I talked to him today and he seems pretty set on a king ranch. He really likes the interior. He seems open to other colors. We were talking about black today. If he goes kr should he keep the tan two tone or get the monochromatic option? I always go back and forth those.

Yea, it does look sharp. If it was my truck I would go mono. I'll have to see what he's thinking. I'm going to try and go look at some in person this weekend maybe.

I like the platinum. I like the kr. I like them all. I have enough cash to buy a platinum or kr but the perceived value isnt there for me yet. Im stuck on a odd 6l that has the 06 or 07 model year on it and 30-50k miles. Do the longevity mods and get away with about a 450 hp truck that'll last another 200k.

Or maybe a lariat 6.7 that is a 14 with a small number of miles. Idk. I hate buying trucks just because of where the prices are. Its a big purchase.

The 2015 king ranch interior is the most comfortable interior I've ever had. Its extremely plush compared to our lariats and platinums, and definitely my favorite. I have a Mono Bronzefore 15 that is honestly my favorite truck I've ever had
