I have a 1996 7.3 powerstroke and I think my pcm is fried. My mechanic said he swapped my computer into a truck that was running and said that it did not start as well. My question is: can any pcm be interchanged? I thought there were codes on them that were specific. My mechanic is very experienced with diesels but at the same time I want to be certain that in fact the pcm's can be interchanged.

You should match the code to yours.

If the codes don't match could you still turn the truck on and see if it works or not?

I think it depends how far off the programming is.
But really, I don't know. Lol

You need a PCM with the same DPC #. You do not need to match the exact 4 digit code though. For example, there are many different PCM's in the DPC-202 family (MIF1, NAW4, TDE0, etc). So as long as you find a PCM with the same DPC #, it will interchange without issue.
