Okay, ive been around this forum and decided to create an account. What is the best way to roll race a 5r from a 40-45 mph roll. In cars id usually go from highest gear on shifter and bump it into drive when i was pushing high rpms. But in diesel trucks lockup is much more agressive and trans tuning goes a long ways. So would a 3rd gear roll throwing it into drive and hitting 4th gear lockup be the best bet? Or would a straight 4th gear lockup roll be the best bet? This may sound like a stupid question, but its stuff id like to know especially with trans tuning and such. :fustrate:

Depends on gearing and tire size but in my truck (3.55 gears and 35s) I would start in 3rd. That would put me just past 2k rpms with the converter locked so spool would be instant but I wouldn't have to shift right away. Also tuning would matter. Most tunes lockup at wot but if the tune didn't you might have to start in 4th

Im running 3.73, my 3d gear doesnt have lockup unless i am wot from a dead takeoff is what ive been told with my custom tune. I was under the impression 4th gear was the best because its the 1:1 gear, and it doesnt upshift or downshift.

What tunes are you running? It shouldn't matter whether you're starting from stopped or not, the converter locks at a set transmission output shaft speed based on throttle. On our trucks you can only pick 1st,2nd, or 3rd with the shifter, so there's no way to guarantee that the truck stays in 4th without adjusting the tune to do so.

Im running inn ovative diesel tunes, when i bought them he said it would lockup 2+ under wot, but in the 5r trannies you skip 4th unless tranny is cold, so it shifts 1-2-3-5-6 since 4 and 5 are almost the same ratio. But eith my shifter in 3rd when i floor it it just immediately rev limits at like 3200-3500 (i believe?)
