I'm cruising along in my dually yesterday. Had the cruise set at 70. I got my first message ever on the screen stating cleaning the diesel filter. Truck has almost 1300 miles on it. Prior to me going on my trip, I got a message of 500 miles of fluid left. Most of those miles were towing.

Exactly how does this regen/ DEF crap work? Does DEF get injected all the time to lower emission and regen to burn the soot or does the DEF get used to burn soot?

My MPG drop from 15.3 to 14.7 when I saw the cleaning filter message. The mileage dropped for approximately 20 miles.

My dad said if you drive it hard you dont get that happening very much. He said if you let it idle alot or puzzyfoot it, it does it alot.

The fords seem to be better on def whereas the gm's are def guzzlin bastards. To which I have personal knowledge.

The harder you work the truck, the hotter the EGT's, the less soot build up in the filter. So that's absolutely correct, if you tow a lot, you'll see less regens.

I know it isnt apples to apples but my 2014 dmax only regened once that I know of. I never duhleeted it. But i drove it hard. It was always hooked to a trailer, always had a stowaway drawer setup and lumber in it. About a grand worth of weight. Not counting the weathergards and tools in them. Only time it regened it was parked, running, in 3° weather. I noticed it sounding funny, rattling alot, it was lunchtime so we got in and hammered down and the message went away. My 08 and 09 didnt have def but did have the deepeeeff and they clogged waaaay more even driving like an azz.

The DEF is used most of the time, in a effort to minimize the quantity of regens. Your 500 mile till empty was most likely due to not have one a full tank when you bought it.

I see on my 2015 roughly 6500-7000 miles out of a rank of DEF. AND 350-450 miles between regens. My 2011 was in the same area.
From what I've heard from guys with Rams and GM stuff. The fords seem to be better on DEF.

Even if you drive it hard at some point the truck will default into a regen. Regardless of needing one or not. Same for Chevy and Ram.

I got a best of 4500 miles between def. and in some cases 3500miles if I towed a ton.

I was on 37s at the time.

I've been running the same tank of DEF for about 15,000 miles now. Just goes on forever.

DEF has nothing to do with soot/regens really. DEF is targeting nox, and simple terms its being used all the time, while regens are burning off the soot accumulations.

My 13 will not go longer than 500 miles between regens. 3.31s and stock tires equal regens with less than 200 miles between. DEF is about 1 gallon per 1,000 miles.

If your truck goes below 100 or 150 miles between regens then it has a issue according to ford. It's suppose to regen every 150-500 miles, anything outside those numbers and you have a issue.

Hah, I am pretty sure that Ford would think that I have an issue for not having a regen in 15,000 miles.

My 2015 F-550 does a regen every 3-500 miles and uses about a gallon of DEF every 1k miles. Been doing that since I got it on Halloween 2014 and it's got 47k miles now.

X2

Dunno bout ford but cummins has different settings for temp, speed, duty cycle, etc... for regens per vehicle and engine.

As said def cracks nox so it depends on how much nox is produced and converted to co2 per epa.

Like stated above the two items are different

dEF reduces NoX. By using def the engines are allowed more timing and less egr. This allows for higher EGTs which makes the *** stay cleaner because you are hitting the target 1086 degree temperature that allows spot to be converted to gas.

The other end of that coin is the more heat the more DEF that needs to be injected.

So if you tow a lot you will use more def but regen less
If you put around you will regen more but use almost zero def. the factory air to water also does a good job to help keep EGTs up even during light load situations.

Your truck should use about a gallon every 1000 miles under mixed usage.
Hope this helps
