:fordoval:Hey guys. Just ordered a new sct x4 for my 06 Powerstroke. The egr ****** has been done and the check engine light from insufficient egr flow has been bugging the hell out of me. The main reason I ordered the tuner was to turn off that damn light. The truck has the egr ****** and new oil cooler. Haven't done the head studs or coolant filtration. I'm not looking for a whole lot more power. I would like to get a little better fuel economy. I don't have a monitor or gauges. I wouldn't mind adding a tow or economy to tune. I'm sure the safest thing to do would be just shut the egr off and leave it at that. I don't pull anything really heavy. I have a 22' boat and a 23' camper. I'm just wondering what you guys would recommend. Am I safe to add one of the lower tunes without studs or a way to keep a better eye on the engine? Thanks in advance for the advice.

A tow tune would be geat for what you are looking for. Most shut off the egr, and it wont smoketoo much if at all. It doesn't push too much, so you should be ok without studs, at least until you get them done. Studs really should be a must do eventually.

What will the canned tunes be on the x4? Had a TS chip in my 7.3 with some custom tunes. That seemed like the way to go. I imagine it's the same for the six liter.

Could have just plugged an egr valve back in without putting it in the manifold and it would have turned the light off. When I did the ****** on my 6.0 I removed the cooler but left the valve in the intake manifold. Never had the light come on.

Tunes aren't a bad thing, just make sure you monitor your temps to keep from getting it to hot.

When you pug in the tuner, you have the option to turn the EGR ON OR OFF, once its off you will lose the Check engine light.

The x4 will come with 4 tunes: 50hp tow, 65hp tow, street, and performance. My go to is the 65hp tow, it shifts good, I get about 1.5 mpg better, little to no smoke, and power is significantly better. The next step up is the street tune, which has a lot more power, a little better fuel economy, but I feel it has "light switch" power, and the shifting is more harsh. Just my experience...the x4 is a great unit you should enjoy it

The egr valve is still in it. The cooler is gone though. The code was a P401. Insufficient egr flow. I've just been using the 50hp tow tune. Backed the shifts off a little to -10%. Really like the tuner. Pretty familiar with the tech for the obs 7.3 since that's what I had last. The x4 seems pretty advanced as far as the available options. I just had gauges and a TS chip with PHP tunes in my 96. Tried out the street tune just for the hell of it. It had just got done raining/snowing and the tires broke free pretty easily from about a 15 mph roll and again from first-second. I plan on just leaving it in the 50hp tune until I get the studs done. With winter here, don't plan on towing the boat or camper much. Thanks again for the help guys.

Get some Gear-Head custom tunes, you will love the tuner even more, the change in driveability ,reliability, power, shifting and fuel mileage is unbelievable.
