The steering box on my 04 f250 is loose. Is it possible to tighten it or do I need to replace it?

I am not sure what part it would be. There is play in my steering and I was told it was the steering box.

you need to loosen the jam nut first, then tighten the rod with a flathead screwdriver in small increments. If you tighten it too much, it will put too much drag on it and the steering wheel won't return to the straight position... that makes for a horrible vehicle to drive after you've had a couple.

First check for something worn out in the linkage, that usually where the problem is. Then if you have to adjust the gear correct way to set up preload is to remove the gear and use a dial type inch lb torque wrench and measure the drag as you rotate the gear thru center. It should have about 15-17 inch lb thru center. IDK how you could do it correctly any other way. I use to work in Ford proto type shop and set up many of these gears with the engineers the developed them.
