What's the benefits of welding the Cam gear and is there any how to's ? Thanks

Keeps it from moving.
Four or five tack welds right where the gear meets the camshaft.
Do Not weld the cam gear to the crankshaft gear.

But when I hit the key all it does is thunk. If I keep the key on the cable catches on fire. What could it be.

Not exactly this, but something close.
You know the kits to make SBC cams gear to gear? Those intermediate gears are lubed with needle bearings. one of those needle bearings will lock a motor up tighter than a drum.
Had virtually that same conversation with a customer, after he installed one. We went back with a conventional double roller timing set.
