Getting the adapter plate would be the first start. But like stated I wonder what the PCM and tcm would do. Be cool as heck I'd say. Manual mode in these trucks work excellent but just not the same feel

If you had a hotter 6.7, say 600hp, it'd take alot of work to keep that unit going if you ever worked the truck. You could probably drive around empty infinitely. I guess that's the million dollar.question. Are we going through the drive thru window at the coffee shop or running down the road with a load behind us. The latter with a tuned truck would probably kill one of those zf's.

Automatics have way better cooling and with tuning custom designed to operate the trans safely for the intended task, ie, tow tunes, the trans will last quite well. The 6r has proven to be fairly durable in stock form after seeing what H&S did to theirs.

I understand some guys still have dreams of rowing a 10spd kenworth with a cat but that loses its luster quick.

My buddies 6.7 ctd with a 6spd makes me wanna shoot myself :D

The zf6 is cooled just like a automatic so don't necessarily see heat being a issue. The shafts might but autos need upgraded shafts and I'm sure there is a place that makes them for the zf6 So I don't see it not holding the power after upgraded parts. Plus it'd end up being cheaper to strengthen.
Only thing you might have a problem would be twisting the aluminum housing. Dodge guys are having the problem with the g56 tranny and they fixed it with girdles. I guess it comes down to if you have the money, the drive and the time it can be done. The thing that boggles me would make that engine run without communicating to the tcm. These trucks are so smart

A zf 5-6 whatever WILL NOT hold continuous power that a stock 6.7 can dish out. There is NO aftermarket shafts, syncro's or anything else out there to make a zf 5-6 any better than in stock form. The only gain over as auto trans would be for a competition sled pulling vehicle where you only want one gear, running for short periods of time, low range in the transfer case and need 4000+ rom to spool a large competition turbo.

All preferences aside no BS just the facts a zf 5-6 conversion would be very costly, slower and less reliable than a stock 6r any day of the week at all power levels from stock on up. They were designed to hold 650 input FTlbs of torque not 890 our of a stock 6.7. A 6.7 would eat it alive over not too many miles if towed heavy.

The zf trans is not cooled the same (3.5 quarts fluids capacity compared to 12+ quarts in most all the autos) as the auto. It will get hot and melt under high loads and high stress applications.

The demand for them is gone. That's what I believe I don't think it's bc they don't hold or can't make them hold it just wouldn't be worth the time to develop a manual and auto truck when nobody wants to buy the manual or half he people now days don't know how to drive them. I'm not trying to start a pissing contest just what I'm thinking. Sorry for the derail

I've always preferred a manual in snow and mud.


Never really got how people complain about driving a manual in traffic, its like something you don't/ shouldn't even think about... If you're good enough at it.
