How wide can the rears be without spacers?
Not a heavy tower.

Might go to 285, but you'll be down to about a 1/2" between them. Won't tolerate big weight, I think.

I know a few pipeliner running 12k rigs with 285 mts, with decent results. Couldn't tell you the brand of tire off hand. I'm sure rim width probably is a factor too, most of them are aftermarket rims.

265s are the max I would go on stock rims with no spacers. I'm running 2 in spacers for when I had 35s. I have 285s now. It's a big space now. But it works

These are 285/75/17 toyo's on factory rims with 2" spacers.

16 inch rims? I ran a 255 85 16 on my dually without a spacer and had about an inch between them. then I got a 2.5" spacer and it was awesome. even had plenty of room for 285s and now I have 265s on it now. I like how much room there is between them. even more then stock width.

I'm running 2in with 285s, I love the space and the stance. Just sucks discount tire won't touch it..

^^^^my discount tire gave me problems when I went with 285 toyo mt. Wouldnt mount the rears cause the "wheel is to narrow" and said they cant touch the spacer, so pissed off I went else where to have em mounted. Weird thing was I took it in for balance and rotation and they never said a word about it.
