I dont do many brake jobs. Got a 06 6.0 f250. I pulled the factory front pads off and they have retainer clips on each end... the new ones didnt come with them. was I supposed to get them?

the rear ones came with them

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It depends on the pad manufacturer.

The Hawk pads I put on my truck didn't come with any front or rear. I was a bit disspointed with that.

You can get away with reusing the hadware if they appear to be in good shape but you run a higher risk of one breaking. The safe bet is to get a new hardware kit. They're pretty cheap.

Im not sure what the theory is behind them?

I dont fuggin use em. Stopped when I started dremeling the slots out on the caliper bracket to allow the pads to move. If your stuff sits long periods id use them as the prevent the pad from rusting solid to the bracket. Its your call.

The spring action of the hardware is meant to keep them from "wobbling" around in the caliper bracket whle cruising. They will also take the abuse of the pad working forward in the caliper bracket during brake application. This helps the caliper brackets to live longer. I haven't seen too many issues with this on Superduties, but other cars like Caravans and several other Dodge vehicles are very sensitive to this.

edit: Another tip. A light coating of Sta-Lube synthetic grease in the caliper slots and on the back side of the pads against the pistons will go a long ways to keeping corrosion down and it makes for nice, smooth, quiet brake operation. Just don't slobber it on and get it on the rotor or pad surface.

wel i cant re-use them because they fell apart... I was wondering if they were just from factory like that, and maybe the new pads didnt use them.

Ok, I got a new hardware kit. I checked and rechecked and everything seems to be on correct... I went to break em in and I have this tinking sound when I get to low speeds. Under 10 mph. do you think they just need to be worn in?

PM replied. The harware should fit the pads very snugly. I usually murder my fingers getting those little clips on and off. And it's totally possible to put them together backwards.

Anyone have a detailed pic on how they install? Just did my truck and want to make sure I did it right before I button it up (old pads had missing clips)

They come with new calipers and they usually point at each other one is bottom and one is top.

The 05+ pad's, clips, have a left and right or a top and bottom to fit correctly. They will go on backwards, but the "tit" on the pad denotes how the clip goes.

Once its on correct you can see the difference. The 99-04 clips sit in the caliper bracket.

I saw how one of the clips wouldn't go on because of the little stud on the pad, but would go on the bottom. But it just seems like it doesn't really hold in the caliper bracket? I did get it all in there, just seems weird, reason I'm doubting myself. All I've ever done were 99-2004 brakes.

This is how I did the clips. Is this correct?

I can't tell for 100% from the pic, but the bottom of the clip looks like maybe it needs down slightly.

The notch looks in place from what I can tell.
