I have always seen the air side cooler put in line. That was on stock and V10 coolers for tranny.

It only makes sense to bypass the radiator cooler if you don't understand how the system works.

Many people, trans shops included, seem to think that the radiator cooler is there to warm the ATF when the trans is cold. THAT IS NOT TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've tested this as cold as -40F and the radiator cooler ALWAYS cools the ATF. Always. Without exception.

I think that most people miss that the section of the radiator where the trans cooler is located is in the area where the already cooled engine coolant is located. So if the engine is at 200F and the ambient air temperature is 0F, the coolant temperature is going to be near 0F, never anywhere near 200F.

The radiator cooler is a VERY effective cooler. If you bypass it you will lose a lot of cooling capacity.

Never remove the trans cooler from the Rad, trans line to rad cooler first then to cooler then back to trans.

As usual Mark is spot on. I bought a used 2002 7.3 CCLB, previous owner had bypassed the internal trans cooler and had a very large external up front. Pulling either of our trailers in slow traffic on a hot day the temps would climb to 220+. Stopping and putting it in park wouldn't help the temps come down, basically had to turn off the truck and let it cool.

When we finished our 7.3 radiator we tested in our truck. Hooked up the internal trans cooler and kept the external as well. Temps are always perfect, have never been near 200 again.

This is one of the trailers I pull. We drag it out at the sand dunes.

Mark, As always great info. Now to my hijack.
Does anyone know where to get fittings for a 6.0 Radiator for the cooler lines. I swapped my Ex to a 6.0 setup but have not been able to find 1/2 trans line fittings to go into the radiator so i can hook it up.
