Why so may lifter failures?
Dont 7.3, 6.0, 6.4, all use the same lifters?

I'm going to say added heat from Regens. But most is probably poor maintenance, the 6.4 over all has to be the most poorly maintained engine I've seen. People think because they can handle / put out a lot of power they are impervious to poor maintenance. People who don't change their oil often, use poor quality filters and so on. Some could be from leaky pumps dumping fuel right on the cam below too. Mine looked great for having 229k plus miles on them, swapped them out just for piece of mind while I had it all apart. Some could just be manufacturing defects, I've seen a lot of 6.0's with chewed oil pumps due to needle bearings from the lifters going through them.

Yes they do. But in 6.0/6.4, you are using a bridge to actuate 2 valves so we have a lot more tension than that of a 7.3. Combine the low oil pressure we see when hot, and extended idle. With the 6.4 factor in the added fuel in the oil from regens and boom.

This last failure had gotten 7k oil changes from dealer until 100k, that's when he had someone else start them. It came in with the correct filter and cap also. So whoever was doing them was doing it correct.

I have now added the 2nd lowest mileage lifter failure. First being 55k, but it was an ambulance that was idled to death. This one @115k is really throwing me off. The truck I just bought has one failed @196k. I know the truck, and oil was always done @5k with OE filter.

Been awhile for this thread

I'm at 117k. 41k on the engine since cranked it up March 2 last year. Replaced water pump and I think a turbo getting ready chit the bed... Really want single on it, but that's a chunk of change right now.

I got 200K on mine and I'm afraid to drive the friggin thing. Stock from the factory except that it got a new fuel system at 99.99955K on Ford's dime.

Up pipes have been leaking, new *** 20K miles ago solved that.

It now has coolant leaking on the ground and it idles rough from time to time. Not sure what I should do with it. We need it for camping this summer. Rebuilt 6.4 engines are really expensive. I'm afraid to run it.

I almost never idle it. Not even much to warm it up in winter. I know of 3 6.4s that have grenaded while idling. All valvetrain failures.

What a POS engine !

You're still here with that bs?

Edit: if you cant scrape up 6 grand for a set of heads and a shortblock from ford, you need an s10 or prius.

I bought my '08 in April of '07. I ******d and tuned at 76,000. At 101,000 the tranny went out. I blame the tune, it never did shift right. At 149,xxx, an injector stuck open while towing my toyhauler up a hill and melted #8. Rebuilt with a long block this past fall with the usual upgrades. I've got 152,xxx on it now and fully expect to get 3-400k out of this motor.

$6K might cover a LONGBLOCK, but it doesn't touch the new injectors, turbo, HPFP, glow plugs, ****** kit and gasket set needed to build a decently bulletproof engine. Nor the labor to do it.

If you knew anything about diesel engines you'd understand how stupid your recommendation to rebuild an engine with 200K is. I've got a skid steer with higher hours than my truck and we haven't touched the engine in it and it works one h3ll of a lot harder than the engine in my truck. And the oil change interval on it is 250 hours.

Why Ford can't put a decent diesel in their trucks is beyond me.

I was thinking the exact same thing. It's like a broken freaking record...

Here's a shocker.... Sell it!! Or better yet, do a Cummins swap. Oh wait, you've been bitching about the 6.4 since the day you got it and supposedly where going to swap a 6.7 Cummins, but haven't. You keep bitching about the Powerstroke but do NOTHING otherwise. Again, broken freaking record.

My last post was riddled with auto-uncorrected garbage so I ******d it. Ill type something out, edit as I compose, and when I hit send it turns it into pig latin. Im sure the point was still there but its not worth it....

Im betting he is still driving the "pile of crap". He is a whiner. Or complainer. Im not sure what exactly he is seeking. If he'd have asked Id have told him NOT to buy it.

I'm at 136k.

It's pointless for me to post what I've had to replace though....some of it had to. Other parts I did because I wanted to LOL

Long Story Short Though, Mine's on its 2nd Motor and I think 4th Transmission. Abuse from prior owners took its toll...And I paid the price, Literally
